Women’s golf to take on 17-team field in Hot Springs Village, Arkansas, for final tournament of fall season
NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin women's golf team's fall slate of tournaments will culminate at the Little Rock Women's Golf Classic Sunday-Tuesday, Oct. 28-30 as the Ladyjacks make their first trip of the season to the Natural State for the three-day event held at the Diamante Country Club in Hot Springs Village, Arkansas.
The Format
The 54-hole tournament will be played across three days with one 18-hole round taking place each day. Play will get underway Sunday morning at 8:30 a.m. CST with opening-round tee times, followed by tee times for Monday's second round also starting at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday's third and final round will begin at 8:30 a.m. with a shotgun start.
The Course
The Diamante Country Club, which received major renovations this past April, features a par-72, 6,076-yard course that is ranked as the No. 3 golf course in Arkansas. Golf Digest officially ranked Diamante as the top golf course in the state from 1997-2000 and in 2009 it was rated as the 38th-most difficult course in the United States by the magazine. In 2006, Private Clubs magazine included the course as one of the "10 Toughest ClubCorp Courses".
The Tournament Field
A total of 17 teams will converge in Hot Springs Village as tournament host Little Rock welcomes 16 programs, including five Southland Conference squads. Joining SFA at the Diamante Country Club from the league will be Central Arkansas, Lamar, McNeese and two-time defending Southland champion Houston Baptist. Arkansas State, Jacksonville State, Missouri State, Northern Iowa, South Alabama, Louisiana-Monroe, Missouri-Kansas City, UT Arlington, Utah Valley, UTEP and Western Kentucky complete the tournament field.
The Lineup
Five Ladyjack golfers will be in action in Arkansas as SFA's lineup features senior Erica Lautensack, juniors Paola Cortes and Alexandra Batista, sophomore Kelly Yang and freshman Zayda Cedillo.
Tee Times
Paired with Jacksonville State and UCA for Sunday's first round, the Ladyjacks will tee off from hole one beginning at 8:30 a.m. Cedillo will get things started for SFA, followed by Yang teeing off at 8:39 a.m., Batista at 8:48 a.m., Cortes at 8:57 a.m. and Lautensack 9:06 a.m.
Last Time on the Links
SFA returns to tournament play less than one week removed from competing at the UT Arlington Invitational this past Monday and Tuesday in Mansfield, Texas. The Ladyjacks shot a 19-over 303 in the second round of the event as both Cortes and Batista posted top-25 finishes for season-best placements. Cortes turned in a score of 19-over 232 to finish 23rd, while Batista, who played the field as an individual, carded a 21-over 234 to tie for 24th. Yang finished just outside the top 25, tying for 26th after shooting a 22-over 235 across the three rounds. Making her debut in SFA's lineup, Cedillo placed 31st with a two-day score of 25-over 238.
Last Year in Little Rock
A year ago, the Ladyjacks tied for 11th among 15 teams at the Little Rock Women's Golf Classic, owning a three-day tally of 73-over 937. Batista tied for 21st among 81 total golfers after shooting a 14-over 230 across the three rounds, while Lautensack tied for 34th with an 18-over 234. In 2016, SFA was 10th out of 16 teams at the annual tournament with a 59-over 923. This weekend will mark the fourth-straight season the Ladyjacks have participated in the Little Rock Women's Golf Classic as the tournament enters its 12th year of existence. Missouri State won the team title at last year's Little Rock Women's Golf Classic, while UCA took home top honors at the 2016 version of the tournament. UCA has finished no worse than runner-up at the last three Little Rock Women's Golf Classic events.
Up Next…
The Ladyjacks will have the rest of the fall and the winter off from tournament play before returning to the links for competition this spring. The Texas State Invitational will kick off SFA's spring championship season Monday and Tuesday, Feb. 11-12 at the Plum Creek Golf in Kyle, Texas.
