‘Jacks head to the Natural State to compete in 17-team tournament field at the Chenal Country Club in Little Rock
NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The fall portion of the Stephen F. Austin men's golf schedule will conclude this week as the Lumberjacks are set for play in the Natural State at the Little Rock Invitational held Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 22-23 in Little Rock, Arkansas.
The Format
Taking place for the 26th time, the two-day, 54-hole tournament features two rounds and 36 holes of continues play Monday, followed by the third and final round Tuesday morning. Both days of play will get started with a shotgun start at 8:15 a.m. CST.
The Course
Held at the Chenal Country Club on the Bear Den Course, which was designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr., the 18 holes will encompass 7,326 yards of greens and play as a par-72. The course features tight, tree-lined fairways, crystal clear creeks and protected wildlife areas.
The Tournament Field
A total of 17 teams will be taking part in the Little Rock Invitational as four fellow Southland Conference teams join SFA to represent the league, including Lamar, Abilene Christian, Central Arkansas and Houston Baptist. In addition to tournament host Little Rock, UNLV, Arkansas State, Illinois State, Arizona, Louisiana-Monroe, Seattle University, UT Arlington, Miami University (Ohio), Missouri State, Eastern Kentucky and Texas State will all converge at the Chenal Country Club this week.
The Lineup
Anchored by senior Angelo Leyvani, the Lumberjacks' lineup will feature sophomore Steven Fabik, senior Jake Hendrix, freshman Isiah Henderson and sophomore Midland College transfer Justin Benson, who will be competing in just his second tournament as a 'Jack.
Tee Times
Paired with Houston Baptist and individual competitors for Monday's opening two rounds, SFA will tee off at 8:15 a.m. Leyvani and Fabik will both begin on hole 16, while Hendrix will tee off of hole 17 with Henderson and Benson starting on hole 18.
Last Time Out
Last week, the Lumberjacks' play at the Jim Rivers Intercollegiate (Oct. 15-16) in Choudrant, Louisiana, was cut short after heavy rain canceled Tuesday's third and final round. Through two rounds, SFA was tied for 13th among 15 teams with a 36-hole score of 27-over 603. Leyvani continued his blistering start to the 2018-19 season with his third top-15 finish this fall. He tied for 11th among 85 total golfers with a 1-under 143, shooting at par-72 in the first round and claiming a 1-under 71 in the second round. Fabik posted his second top-25 finish of the season by tying for 25th with a 2-over 146.
Last Year in Little Rock
The 'Jacks claimed a third-place finish at the 2017 version of the Little Rock Invitational after shooting a 4-over 292 in the second round. Tournament host Little Rock (15-over 879) captured the team title with a nine stroke lead as Illinois State (24-over 888) claimed runner-up honors six strokes ahead of SFA.
Up Next…
The 'Jacks will take the remainder of the fall and winter off from competition before returning to tournament play for their spring championship season. SFA will head to Patterson, Louisiana, Feb. 18-19 for Nicholls' Atchafalaya Intercollegiate held at the Atchafalaya Golf Course to begin 2019.
