Ladyjacks defeat trio of nationally-ranked opponents, claim four match wins on day two of competition
HARAHAN, La. – The sixth-ranked Stephen F. Austin bowling team moved up three spots to second place Saturday at the 2018 Allstate Sugar Bowl Collegiate Invitational inside the Colonial Lanes, after claiming four match wins and topping a trio of nationally-ranked teams. The Ladyjacks racked up 4,776 additional pins in five traditional team matches on the second day of bowling in Harahan, Louisiana.
SFA, who now holds a 6-4 record on the weekend, owns a pinfall total of 9,261 and sits just five pins behind fellow Southland Bowling League member and fourth-ranked Sam Houston State, who owns the tournament lead with 9,266 total pins. Tournament host and 10th-ranked Tulane (9,225) sits in third place in the team standings, while 17th-ranked Louisiana Tech (9,150) is fourth.
After a 943-923 setback against 11th-ranked North Carolina A&T to open up Saturday's slate of play, the Ladyjacks responded with a convincing 965-811 match win over Florida A&M. Both seniors Dakotah Hazlewood (201) and Paige Beeny (213) chipped in games over 200 as no SFA bowler rolled a game below 175, setting the pace for the Ladyjacks' remaining matches of the day.
SFA earned its first of three triumphs over a nationally-ranked opponent in its third match of the day. Facing 10th-ranked Tulane, the Ladyjacks had three bowlers contribute 200-pin games with sophomore Dakota Faichnie (204), junior Megan Eaglehouse (211) and Beeney (227) leading the charge for a 1,008-919 match victory. SFA then downed No. 17 Louisiana Tech by a pinfall tally of 942-839 behind Eaglehouse's 202 and Hazlewood's 213.
In their second bout with the Bearkats of No. 4 Sam Houston State this weekend, the Ladyjacks avenged Friday's loss with a 938-902 match win. SFA got a team-high 224 from Hazlewood, a 191 from freshman Carlene Beyer and a 183 from Eaglehouse to secure the match and their fourth-straight victory of the day.
Two Ladyjack bowlers finished the day among the top 10 of the individual standings as Hazlewood averaged a 203.4 in the five matches to earn second place among 98 total bowlers. Beeney placed fifth with a 195.2 game average, while Eaglehouse finished 14th after averaging a game score of 188.2. In her inaugural collegiate tournament, Beyer placed 16th by posting a 187.2 average in Saturday's matches.
The three-day Allstate Sugar Bowl Collegiate Invitational will conclude Sunday with three best 4-of-7 bracket play Baker matches beginning at 8:30 a.m. With seeding for Sunday's bracket play determined by teams' pinfall total from Friday and Saturday's Baker and team matches, the Ladyjacks earned the No. 2 seed and will face top-seeded Sam Houston State in the opening round. With a first-round win over the Bearkats, SFA would earn an automatic spot in the tournament's championship match and take on either third-seeded Tulane, fourth-seeded Louisiana Tech or No. 1 seed Sam Houston State once again.
