SFA one of just three teams to knock down over 1,000 pins in a match Friday, own a pinfall total of 4,485 through five Baker matches
HARAHAN, La. – The 2018-19 NCAA bowling season is officially underway for Stephen F. Austin as the Ladyjacks opened up play at the sixth annual Allstate Sugar Bowl Collegiate Invitational Friday at the Colonial Lanes in Harahan, Louisiana. SFA, ranked as the sixth-best team in the country according to the National Tenpin Coaches Association's (NTCA) preseason poll, was one of just three teams to knock down over 1,000 pins in a match on day one of competition.
After five Baker matches were bowled Friday, SFA sits in fifth place among the 14-team tournament field with a pinfall total of 4,485.
In their opening match of the weekend, the Ladyjacks were edged by a mere two pins (956-954) by 16th-ranked UAB. Despite out-bowling the Blazers in three of the five games, SFA could not match UAB's 235 rolled in game five of the match. The Ladyjacks then struggled to find their rhythm against fellow Southland Bowling League member Valparaiso, who received votes in the preseason top 25, as the Crusaders opened up the match with back-to-back games 200-pin games and claimed 914 total in the affair. SFA earned wins in games three (155-147) and five (170-153) of the match but was only able to tally a score of 769.
A 928-880 victory over Southern University got the Ladyjacks in the win column with SFA reaching the 200-pin mark twice. The Ladyjacks bowled a 214 in game four and a 200 in game five, making a comeback after being outdone in two of the first three games of the match. Taking on its second Southland Bowling League opponent of the day, SFA ran into a strong fourth-ranked Sam Houston State squad, who accumulated 944 pins by rolling three 200-pin games. The Ladyjacks lone game win in the match came in game four when SFA out-bowled the Bearkats 162-135.
SFA closed out the day with a statement, racking up 1,065 pins and winning four out of five games against No. 25 Texas Southern for a 1,065-917 match triumph. The Ladyjacks began the match by bowling consecutive games of 232, followed by a 199, 210 and 192.
Seven different SFA bowlers appeared in the Ladyjacks' lineup Friday as freshman Carlene Beyer started every match in her collegiate debut.
Sam Houston State owns the event lead after going 4-1 on day one of competition and claiming 4,794 total pins, while 17th-ranked Louisiana Tech is in second place also with a 4-1 record and 4,662 pins. Tournament host and 10th-ranked Tulane is third with a 3-2 mark and a pinfall total of 4,623 as No. 11 North Carolina A&T went a perfect 5-0 Friday and is in fourth place with 4,494 pins.
The three-day tournament will continue Saturday with five traditional team matches starting at 8:55 a.m. The Ladyjacks will face 11th-ranked North Carolina A&T first, followed by Florida A&M, No. 10 Tulane, 17th-ranked Louisiana Tech and Jackson State.
On Sunday, Oct. 21, the Allstate Sugar Bowl Collegiate Invitational will conclude with three best 4-of-7 bracket play Baker matches beginning at 8:30 a.m. Seeding for Sunday's bracket play will be determined by teams' pinfall total from Friday and Saturday's Baker and team matches.
