Ladyjacks go a perfect 3-0 in bracket play Sunday to complete Kutztown Invite with a 11-2 record and a seventh-place finish, total 13,279 pins across the three days
READING, Pa. – Competing among 17 of the top-25 teams in the nation, including nine of the top 10, the Stephen F. Austin bowling team posted an 11-2 record at the 10th Annual Kutztown Invitational in Reading, Pennsylvania, over the weekend. The Ladyjacks went an unblemished 3-0 during Sunday's bracket play and picked up victories against three top-16 teams at the Hiester Lanes to capture seventh place. Only tournament champion and second-ranked McKendree University (11-1) tallied as many match wins as SFA did over the course of the three days. The Ladyjacks finished the event with a pinfall total of 13,279.
Starting sophomore Megan Eaglehouse (Cibolo, Texas), juniors Paige Beeney (Salado, Texas) and Dakotah Hazlewood (Capron, Ill.), freshman Sarah Gill (Attleboro, Mass.) and senior Stephanie Schwartz (Racine, Wis.), SFA got help from senior Kelsi Anderson (San Antonio, Texas) and posted three consecutive games of over 200 to take a 3-0 lead in its opening match against 13th-ranked Adelphi University. The Ladyjacks bowled a 215, followed by a 238 in game two and a 212 in the third game, before being edged in game four. SFA clinched the first-round affair 4-1 with a 197-162 win in game five to advance in its quest for seventh place.
Taking on 10th-ranked Fairleigh Dickinson in the second round of the day, the Ladyjacks showed no signs of slowing as the match result would be an identical 4-1 victory for SFA. After claiming the first three games by scores of 213-187, 215-180 and 197-187, the Ladyjacks were upended in game four. Behind match starters Anderson, Beeney, Hazlewood, Gill and Schwartz, and freshmen subs Sarah Voiers (Chesterton, Ind.) and Dakota Faichnie (Innisfil, Ontario, Canada), SFA won game five 212-188 for the right to play for seventh place.
The Ladyjacks' final match of the day against No. 16 Saint Francis (Pa.) proved to be the most competitive. After dropping game one by 10 pins, SFA rebounded with three-straight game wins. The Ladyjacks claimed pinfall totals of 214, 192 and 212 in games two, three and four, respectively, to take a 3-1 lead in the match. However, the Red Flash would grab a dominant win in game five to make things interesting. With Voiers, Faichnie, Hazlewood, Gill and Schwartz bowling, SFA narrowly topped Saint Francis (Pa.) by just three pins (206-203) in the sixth game to secure the 4-2 victory and seventh-place showing at the event.
Three Southland Bowling League teams finished in the top four as No. 2 McKendree defeated fourth-ranked Vanderbilt 4-3 in the championship match and No. 5 Sam Houston State beat ninth-ranked Tulane 4-1 for third place. McKendree's Breanna Clemmer was named tournament MVP after averaging a 231.6 in individual match play Saturday.
The Ladyjacks have next week off from competition before returning to tournament play in Arlington, Texas, for the Prairie View A&M Invitational Friday-Sunday, Feb. 2-4. The event will be held at the Bowling International Training & Research Center (ITRC).
