Ladyjacks post 4-1 record in Baker matches, tally 5,114 pins on the opening day of the Kutztown Invite in Reading, Pennsylvania
READING, Pa. – With 17 of the top-25 teams converging at the Hiester Lanes in Reading, Pennsylvania, this weekend, the Stephen F. Austin bowling team finds themselves in eighth place among 27 teams after day one of play at Kutztown University's 10th annual Kutztown Invitational. The Ladyjacks bowled to the tune of a 4-1 record Friday, capturing 5,114 total pins while picking up victories over two nationally-ranked opponents in five Baker matches.
Head coach Amber Lemke elected to go with the starting lineup of senior Kelsi Anderson (San Antonio, Texas), freshman Sarah Voiers (Chesterton, Ind.), junior Dakotah Hazlewood (Capron, Ill.), freshman Sarah Gill (Atlleboro, Mass.) and senior Stephanie Schwartz (Racine, Wis.) for four of the five matches as junior Paige Beeney (Salado, Texas), Voiers, Hazlewood, Gill and Schwartz started the fifth. SFA recorded 1,000 pins in each of the first four matches of the day and bowled over a 200 for four-consecutive games to begin match one.
Taking on 13th-ranked Adelphi University to start off the day, the Ladyjacks bowled games of 241, 245, 204, 258 and 181 to win every game of the match and come out ahead 1,129-941. Despite collecting 1,047 pins in its second match, SFA could not equal the 1,083 of No. 16 Saint Francis (Pa.). After getting off to a shaky start with a game of 161, the Ladyjacks quickly rebounded with a 211 and a 214, before witnessing the Red Flash tally a 233 in game four. SFA bowled a 278 in the fifth game for one of the top-10 highest Baker games ever bowled by the Ladyjacks in program history. It was the best Baker game for the Ladyjacks since also registering a 278 against Jackson State on Oct. 20.
Taking down its second ranked opponent of the day, SFA claimed 1,007 pins compared to the 931 of LIU Brooklyn, who is tied for 14th nationally. The Ladyjacks grabbed three more games of 200 or better, including a 247 game three, and built a substantial lead through the first three games of the match that the Blackbirds would not be able to recover from.
SFA dismantled Howard University by a count of 1,027-883, earning wins in four of the five games and posting match-high scores of 235, 215 and 213. Wrapping up Friday's competition, the Ladyjacks picked up a 904-864 win over Franklin Pierce University by bowling a 234 in game two and taking three of the final four games in the match.
With all but one of the nation's top-10 teams missing from the tournament field, defending national champion McKendree University leads after the opening day of play with a pinfall total of 5,394 and a 4-1 record. Fellow Southland Bowling League member and fourth-ranked Vanderbilt owns an unblemished 5-0 record and 5,358 total pins to sit in second place, while Fairleigh Dickinson is third with 5,221 pins and a 4-1 mark.
Traditional team play will resume the Kutztown Invite Saturday with matches getting underway at 8:25 a.m. CST. SFA's five-match slate will feature tournament host Kutztown, 12th-ranked Sacred Heart, No. 10 Fairleigh Dickinson, Duquesne and St. Francis College (N.Y.). Pinfall total from the first two days of competition will determine seeding for Sunday's bracket play, which will include three rounds of best 4-of-7 Baker matches to get started at 7:25 a.m. CST.
