SFA goes 2-1 in bracket play Sunday to capture seventh place in their first tournament of the new year
JONESBORO, Ark. – Taking to the lanes for competition for the first time in 2018, the Stephen F. Austin bowling team notched a seventh-place showing at Arkansas State's Mid-Winter Invitational in Jonesboro, Arkansas, Sunday afternoon. The Ladyjacks defeated UAB, tied 14th nationally according to the December National Tenpin Coaches Association (NTCA) top-25 poll, twice and posted a 2-1 record in bracket play at the Hijinx Family Entertainment Center. SFA finished their opening tournament of the new year with an 8-5 record, claiming 13,540 total pins in an event field that consisted of 13 of the top 25 and seven of the top 10 teams in the nation.
In their first bout with the Blazers, the Ladyjacks relied on freshmen Sarah Voiers (Chesterton, Ind.) and Sarah Gill (Attleboro, Mass.) and senior Morgan Reising (Lewisville, Texas), and were aided by juniors Dakotah Hazlewood (Capron, Ill.) and Paige Beeney (Salado, Texas), sophomore Megan Eaglehouse (Cibolo, Texas) and senior Kelsi Anderson (San Antonio, Texas). After dropping the first game of the match 180-161, SFA bowled a 230 in game two to even things up before grabbing game three 211-160. The Blazers tied the match once again after taking game four 170-147, before the Ladyjacks rattled off the next two games in convincing fashion to earn the 4-2 win.
With its sights set on a fifth-place finish, SFA was met by ninth-ranked and Southland Bowling League foe Tulane in the second round. Going with a lineup of Eaglehouse, Reising, Voiers, Hazlewood and Gill, the Ladyjacks were edged 239-232 in the opening game of the match. The Green Wave showed no signs of slowing down as Tulane came just one pin shy of a perfect game (299) in the second stanza to go ahead 2-0 in the match. Remarkably, the Green Wave bowled just a 169 in the third game as SFA made it 2-1 with a 226. After dropping game four, the Ladyjacks gained a 167-146 game five win to make it a 3-2 match. However, Tulane claimed the fifth game by a count of 236-214 to take the 4-2 victory.
Facing UAB for a second time and competing for seventh place, SFA jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the match after 189-169 and 225-190 game wins behind Eaglehouse, Reising, Voiers, Hazlewood and Gill. The Blazers tallied 257 pins in game three and slid by the Ladyjacks 202-201 in game four to even up the match at 2-2. The two teams then split the next two games with SFA earning a 215-172 game five win and UAB taking game six 215-169. The Ladyjacks proved to be victorious in the seventh and deciding game, registering a 202-191 win to clinch the match 4-3.
Second-ranked McKendree University claimed the Mid-Winter Invitational title by defeating top-ranked and No. 1 seed Nebraska 4-0 in the championship match. In an all-SBL third-place match, fourth-ranked Vanderbilt topped tournament host and third-ranked Arkansas State 4.5-1.5.
The Ladyjacks will now turn their attention to next weekend's Kutztown Invite held in Reading, Pennsylvania, and hosted by Division II Kutztown University. The tournament will get started Friday, Jan. 19 and wrap up on Sunday, Jan. 21.
