
Ladyjacks go 4-1 Friday, Stand in Fifth Place after Day One of Mid-Winter Invitational

SFA totals 4,939 pins on the opening day of the Mid-Winter Invitational, Ladyjacks sit in fifth place in first tournament of 2018
JONESBORO, Ark. – The 2018 spring championship season for the Stephen F. Austin bowling team got underway Friday in Jonesboro, Arkansas, as the Ladyjacks emerged from day one of Arkansas State's Mid-Winter Invitational with a 4-1 record. Totaling 4,939 pins in the five matches, SFA sits in fifth place among the 20-team field as one of five teams who claimed at least four match wins on the opening day of play.
Ranked fifth nationally according to the December National Tenpin Coaches Association (NTCA) top-25 poll, Sam Houston State leads the event at the Hijinx Family Entertainment Center with a pinfall total of 5,111. Top-ranked Nebraska (5,053) is sits in second place, followed by tournament host and third-ranked Arkansas State (4,976) and fourth-ranked Vanderbilt (4,962).
With 13 of the top 25 teams in the nation and seven of the top 10, the seventh-ranked Ladyjacks claimed a pair of wins over two ranked opponents to begin their lone trip to the Natural State this year. SFA took down No. 20 Maryville University in the opening match of the day before handing 11th-ranked Central Missouri a loss. Getting off to a strong start, the Ladyjacks also picked dominant victories over Lincoln (Mo.) and Alabama A&M.
The first of two 1,000-pin matches for SFA came against Maryville University as the Ladyjacks bowled three games of 200 to close out a 1,052-922 win. Despite being deadlocked with 381 pins a piece through the first two games, SFA increased its pinfall total the final three games, including a 239 in game five, to top the Saints. The Ladyjacks then used a strong game two in their second match of the day to defeat Central Missouri by a count of 998-955. SFA tallied 245 pins in its second game against the Jennies and 213 in game five, while Central Missouri claimed just 157 pins in game one and 180 in the fifth game of the match.
The Ladyjacks' most dominant win of the afternoon came in their third match when SFA routed Lincoln (Mo.) 1,066-778. SFA bowled four games of 200 in the victory, including a 245-pin game three, as the Blue Tigers totaled just 109 pins in game one and did not surpass 154 pins in any of the first three games. Alabama A&M stood no match for the Ladyjacks in the fourth competition of the day, reaching just 691 pins compared to SFA's 960. The Ladyjacks achieved the 200-pin game mark three times in the match with the Lady Bulldogs unable to claim more than 150 pins in any game.
In a bowling version of the Battle of the Piney Woods, No. 5 Sam Houston State proved to be too much for SFA. The tournament-leading Bearkats racked up 1,078 pins in the match, including posting 242 in game one, while the Ladyjacks simply could not get the pins to fall. SFA bowled a 202 in game one but could not score higher than a 171 in any of the final four games.
Every available Ladyjack bowled on day one of the tournament with senior Kelsi Anderson (San Antonio, Texas), junior Paige Beeney (Salado, Texas), and freshmen Sarah Voiers (Chesterton, Indiana) and Sarah Gill (Attleboro, Mass.) starting all five matches. Senior Morgan Reising (Lewisville, Texas) started the final three matches of the day and appeared in four matches, while freshman Dakota Faichnie (Innisfil, Ontario, Canada) made two starts. Both junior Dakotah Hazlewood (Capron, Ill.) and sophomore Megan Eaglehouse (Cibolo, Texas) saw action in the final match of the day.
Ninth-ranked Tulane, Drury University, No. 19 Louisiana Tech, second-ranked McKendree University and No. 3 Arkansas Sate await SFA Saturday. The five traditional team matches will start at 9:40 a.m. Saturday morning. Pinfall total after Saturday's matches will determine the seeding for bracket play, which is scheduled to get underway Sunday at 8:30 a.m.
