FRISCO, Texas - Just days after the Stephen F. Austin volleyball team bested every member of the competition at the Mississippi State Bulldog Invitational to cap off a 5-0 week, a pair of Ladyjacks busted out the brooms and provided another sweep - this one in regards to the Southland Conference Player of the Week awards.
Junior outside hitter Haley Coleman earned the title of Southland Conference Offensive Player of the Week and sophomore middle blocker Shayla Eagleton claimed Southland Conference Defensive Player of the Week status it was announced by the league office Monday afternoon.
SFA's sweep of the Southland Conference Player of the Week awards is the program's first since September 7, 2015, when Jacque Allen (offensive) and OJ Olson (defensive) were recognized by the conference office for their performances.
All Coleman did during her second week as an upperclassman was help the Ladyjacks extend the Southland's longest winning streak to seven matches while claiming the Mississippi State Bulldog Invitational title in the process. Hailing from Rockwall, Texas, Coleman upped her season kill total to 77 - the most terminations among all Southland players - by racking up 49 in a perfect 5-0 week for SFA.
Coleman was named the tournament MVP on the heels of a four-match stretch that saw her hit .348 and average 3.00 kills per set. Through the week, she turned in a pair of double-double performances and averaged 2.67 digs per set. Her six aces were the third-most among SFA's ranks through its five-match week as well.
Opposing attackers didn't stand a good chance of generating kills with Eagleton stationed at the front of the net last week. The sophomore out of Richmond, Texas, racked up 20 total blocks, upping her team-leading blocks per set average to 1.12 in the process - the fourth-highest average in the Southland Conference.
Offensively, Eagleton averaged 1.29 kills per set on the strength of a .329 attack percentage. As a team, SFA averaged 2.06 blocks per set through its perfect 5-0 week which helped hold its adversaries to a collective .092 attack percentage.
Those two, along with the rest of their teammates, are set to begin a five-match stretch of action inside their home court of Shelton Gym on the SFA campus this Friday. Playing the role of host for the Holiday Inn Express SFA Volleyball Invitational, SFA welcomes Colgate, Little Rock, Texas Southern and Tulsa to Nacogdoches for the two-day tournament. The Ladyjacks make their home debut at 1:30 p.m. Friday afternoon by taking on Texas Southern before finishing day one later that evening at 6:30 p.m. in a showdown with Tulsa.
