Getting to know Blake Stock
Stock, an All-Southland Third Team selection last year, is one of SFA's top two returning golfers from 2016-17 after posting a 74.23 scoring average and competing in 22 rounds. He registered seven rounds of par-or-better last season, including a 9-under 65 at the Bob Sitton Invitational, which tied for the second-lowest round in SFA history. Stock captured the 2017 Colin Montgomerie Spring Invitational individual title with a 6-under 210 and also tied for third at the 2017 Southland Championship with a 11-over 227, which led the 'Jacks to a runner-up finish at the postseason tournament.
Why did you choose to come and play at SFA?
"I chose to come and play at SFA because I fell in love with the campus. It just felt like the right place for me to come and further my education while getting to play the game that I love. The campus, the atmosphere, and the students just seemed to fit exactly what I was looking for."
Who is the most influential person in your life, and why?
"There have been three people that have majorly influenced my life. My parents have been an unbelievable influence on me. They have sacrificed so much for me to be able to play junior golf as well as collegiate golf. I cannot thank them enough for how they have raised me and taught me to be the man I am today. My previous college golf coach Vince Clark has also had so much influence on my life. Not only in learning about the game of golf through him, but he has also taught me so many life lessons."
What are your top three to five values in life?
"Some of my top values in life are being honest, being courteous, being dedicated, caring for others, and being a hard worker. I grew up learning these values and I continue to live by them to this day. I am dedicated and work hard on and off the golf course because I believe if you want something you can't expect it to be handed to you. You're going to have to work for it. I try my best to care for others and always stay courteous and honest with everyone. Will Smith once said, "If you're not making someone else's life better, then you're wasting your time".
What is your best life lesson learned in college and/or golf?
"The best life lesson I have learned in college and in golf is to deal with it. Vince Clark used to always tell me to deal with whatever comes my way…on or off the golf course. He always taught me that complaining about something does nothing for you, so all you can do is deal with whatever the obstacle is coming your way no matter the severity."
What is your dream job?
"My dream job is to play on the PGA Tour. It has always been a dream of mine to be able to play the game that I love for a living. When I was younger I grew up watching Tiger and Phil play on the PGA Tour and told my parents that was what I was going to be when I grew up."
Who would play you in a movie/TV series?
"I would say Chris Pratt would play as me in a TV show or movie. He plays the role of having a good sense of humor and is very sarcastic."
What is your biggest fear? Is there a personal story about why?
"My biggest fear is without a question clowns. I don't know what it is about them but they just really freak me out. Ronald McDonald did not help the situation when I was a kid either."
What is one thing that no one knows about Blake?
"One thing that no one knows about me is that I love bass fishing. My dad and I would go almost every weekend when I was a kid and it was always a blast. So if I'm not out on the golf course, you can probably put money that I'm in the boat on the water catching some bass."
