Throughout the 2017-18 season, SFAJacks.com will feature a women's golfer or coach with a Q&A leading up to each of the Ladyjacks' tournaments. Today, highlighting redshirt sophomore Alexandra Batista.
NACOGDOCHES, Texas – For the second time this month, the Stephen F. Austin women's golf team will head to Oklahoma, this time competing in Tulsa at Oral Robert University's Mark Allen Shootout. The Ladyjacks' second tournament of their fall slate will be held at the Meadowbrook Country Club as a field of 17 teams will play 36 holes on Monday, followed by 18 holes Tuesday. The two-day tournament presented by the Mark Allen Auto Group will see both days of play getting underway at 8 a.m. with shotgun starts.
A total of six Ladyjacks will take on the par-71, 6,013-yard course including redshirt juniors Jamee Jorgensen (Boerne, Texas) and Erica Lautensack (Arlington, Texas), sophomores Alexandra Batista (Trophy Club, Texas), Haleigh Jordan (San Antonio, Texas), Paola Cortes (Allen, Texas), and freshman Alexis Szewczyk (McKinney, Texas). Jorgensen, Lautensack, Batista, Jordan and Cortes will tee off Monday from the No. 7-9 holes and have been paired with players from UT Arlington and Arkansas State, while Szewczyk will compete as an individual.
SFA is looking to match, if not exceed, its results at the ORU Shootout in 2016 when the Ladyjacks placed third as a team with a three-round score of 60-over 912. After shooting a 23-over 307 and a 22-over 306 in the opening two rounds, SFA improved its score by seven strokes in the third and final round as the Ladyjacks shot a 15-over 299. Paced by a sixth-place finish from Jessie White (10-over 223), Lautensack finished tied for eighth with a 12-over 225. Jordan turned in a score of 19-over 232 to tie for 25th, while Batista tied for 43rd with a three-round total of 23-over 236.
Fellow Southland Conference members Houston Baptist, Incarnate Word, Lamar, McNeese, and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi will also be competing in this year's tournament, along with Arkansas State, Louisiana-Monroe, McLennan Community College, Missouri State, Northern Iowa, host Oral Roberts, Oklahoma Christian, UT Arlington, UTEP, Utah Valley and Wichita State. Live scoring of the tournament can be followed online via BirdieFire.
Getting to know Alexandra Batista
Batista is one of SFA's top two returning golfers from a year ago as she averaged a score 77.06 for the season. She was one of two Ladyjacks to compete in all 33 rounds, posting four top-10 finishes and registering two 71's. One of those even par-71 rounds came at the Southland Championship where she tied for sixth place (7-over 220) to lead SFA. In the Ladyjacks' first tournament of the fall season a couple weeks ago, Batista shot a 19-over 232 to tie for 21st at the Lady Maxwell Invitational.
Why did you choose to come and play at SFA?
"I came to SFA because the golf team was so friendly and welcomed me in like family. We do almost everything together and it's great to have my teammates be my closest friends too."
Who is the most influential person in your life, and why?
"The most influential person in my life is my dad because he always knows what to say when I'm having struggles in life. He sacrifices so much of his time for me and I'm thankful he supports me as much as he does."
What are your top three to five values in life?
"My top three values in life are responsibility, honesty, and respect. It's important to me to know that I am responsible for what I do in life, whether it be school work or just holding myself accountable for my actions. With honesty, I've always been taught that telling the truth will always turn out better in the long run. And by respecting myself, others around me, and my surroundings, I am able to be a good, well-rounded person."
What is your best life lesson learned in college and/or golf?
"The best life lesson golf has taught me is to persevere. As tough as it may get, if you keep fighting, great things will happen."
What is your dream job?
"I would love to be a professional golfer because I'd be able to travel the world while playing my favorite sport. But if that doesn't work out, I'd want to be either a chiropractor or an optometrist."
Who would play you in a movie/TV series?
"I think Madison Pettis could play me in a TV series because we have the same crazy curly hair and I've been told we look slightly similar."
What is your biggest fear? Is there a story behind it?
"I know that this is the strangest fear but I have trypophobia, which is the fear of irregular pattern of small holes. If you don't know what I'm talking about you should Google it. It's the craziest thing but anytime I see a picture of it, it makes my skin crawl."
What is one thing that no one knows about Erica?
"I love to watch makeup videos on YouTube. I can easily spend hours watching tutorials and reviews of products every day."
