Hanna Barker has now earned award twice this season
FRISCO, Texas – Senior midfielder Hanna Barker was one foot and three inches away from a hat trick in Friday night's 2-0 win over Northwestern State at SFA Soccer Field. Even still, Barker had a hand, or rather a foot in both of the Ladyjack goals in the game, notching an assist and a goal. On Tuesday, Barker was once again selected as Southland Conference Offensive Player of the Week for her efforts, earning the award for the second time this season.
Barker came very close to scoring two goals in the run of play before striking paydirt in the second half of Friday's conference opener. The Farmers Branch native very likely would have scored on her shot in the 58th minute of play which was flicked into the goal by teammate Lauren Hall, instead garnering her fourth assist of the season. In the 65th minute, Barker made mincemeat of her defender on an attacking run with a crafty behind the legs dribble and beat the keeper with her shot to the far post, only to watch the shot ricochet off the post and bounce away from goal.
Nonetheless, the opportunities kept coming for Barker, and in the 69th minute she combined with fellow forward Breanna Moore on a great combination move, in which she used a behind the legs pass over to Moore on the left side, then one-touched the resulting pass from Moore past the Lady Demons goalkeeper for her first goal of the game.
Friday's match was an offensive clinic for the Ladyjacks and Barker, who was far and away the best offensive player on the field in leading her team with six shots, part of a team effort of 25 total attempts in the game. For the season, Barker has been a consistent producer, and is now tied for the conference lead in points (10), and is second in goals (3) and assists (4). For her career, Barker continues to climb the program's all-time leaderboard in the above categories, most recently moving into second place all-time in assists (23), fourth all-time in points (69), and eighth in goals (23).
At 4-4 on the season and 1-0 in conference play, the Ladyjacks are currently in a six-way tie for first in the Southland standings, with this weekend's matches at home against Houston Baptist and Texas A & M Corpus Christi representing a chance to create separation in those standings.
