FRISCO, Texas-- The Stephen F. Austin women's soccer team was picked to finish second in the Southland Conference Preseason Poll, per a release from the conference office on Wednesday. The 'Jacks garnered a total of 219 points, and received a total of five first-place votes. Central Arkansas was picked to finish first with 232 points and 14 first-place votes, while Abilene Christian (204), Houston Baptist (280) and Northwestern State (138) rounded out the top five. McNeese ranked sixth with 131 points, while Southeastern Louisiana took the seventh slot with 106 points. Lamar (93), Sam Houston State (86) and Nicholls (82) placed 8-9-10, respectively, while Incarnate Word (61) and A & M Corpus Christi (52) took the last two spots in the poll.
After a run of five straight Southland Conference championships was cut short last season, the 'Jacks look to build on a 13-5 record in the 2016 campaign, as they return 13 letter winners and four Preseason All-Conference players, including 2016 Midfielder of the Year Hanna Barker. Barker tied for the conference lead in points (30) last season as a junior, and ranked first in assists (10) and fifth in goals (10). In the past five seasons, the 'Jacks have excelled in Southland Conference competition, tallying a 46-4-3 record and winning the regular season championship in four of those seasons. Last season saw the 'Jacks accrue a 9-2 record in conference play, only to finish second to Central Arkansas in the regular season standings and fall short of their goal of a sixth-straight conference championship.
