DeLAND, Fla. - Ann Hollas posted her second double-double in as many matches, the tandem of Haley Coleman and Corin Evans combined for 24 of the Ladyjacks' 57 kills and the Stephen F. Austin volleyball team locked down its first victory of 2017 by defeating Central Connecticut State 3-1 at the Edmunds Center Saturday afternoon.
Hollas' double-double consisted of 31 assists and 15 digs, and Coleman completed one of her own by racking up a match-best 14 kills to go along with 13 digs. Junior Makenzee Hanna put forth a great all-around effort by going for eight kills, seven block assists and two of SFA's five service aces.
Eager to secure a win for the first time in 2017, the Ladyjacks had to withstand just one major push from Central Connecticut State in the first set before walking away with a 1-0 lead. Two kills from Hanna and one each from Peyton Redmond, Coleman and Danae Daron helped SFA open up a 6-2 run early on before the Blue Devils made their move.
Four SFA errors provided half of the Blue Devils' points on their 8-1 run which put SFA at a 10-7 disadvantage. Out of the Ladyjacks' timeout, Hanna keyed a 7-1 SFA surge by putting down two more kills and adding a pair of block assists. From there, the Ladyjacks went up 14-11 and never trailed again in the opening frame.
Hanna fired in two aces as part of a 6-1 SFA scoring spree that pushed the Ladyjacks' lead to 20-14 before Coleman's final kill of the set wrapped up the opening set.
A combination of nine unforced errors by SFA and a strong front-row defensive effort by the Blue Devils in set two ensured that extra sets would be required. Central Connecticut State racked up four blocks in the set and led from start to finish.
Consecutive kills from Corin Evans and Shayla Eagleton cut the Blue Devils' lead to 17-13 late in the frame but SFA could get no closer. Three unforced errors by the Ladyjacks and a service ace by Central Connecticut State represented half of the points scored by the Blue Devils during their 8-3 run to close the frame and deadlock things at one set apiece.
A pivotal third set that went back-and-forth the entire way featured 19 ties and nine lead changes before the Ladyjacks finally ended things after being aided by some timely Blue Devil errors. Down 26-25, SFA jumped ahead for good after Coleman struck pay dirt on a kill and Cain served up an ace. Rachel Quirarte tied things at 27-all on the next point, but back-to-back attack errors from the Blue Devils ensured SFA would take a 2-1 lead.
Whatever the Blue Devils had left in the tank once the fourth frame began was sapped away almost single-handedly early on by Evans who punched down three kills during the Ladyjacks' 6-2 opening salvo. That SFA lead ballooned to 10-2 and grew to as much as nine points following consecutive kills from Coleman and Xariah Williams which pushed the score to 20-11.
The Blue Devils closed to within six points before Eagleton and Hanna slammed down kills to end the match and send SFA into the win column for the first time in 2017.
Working with a pair of setters, SFA also saw junior McKenzie Brewer add 17 assists as well as eight digs. Cain led the trio of Ladyajcks who finished with 10 or more digs by diving for a match-high 23 of them.
The Ladyjacks' final match of the Stetson Invitational is set to begin at 5:00 p.m. Saturday evening against the host Hatters who are searching for their first victory of 2017.
