SFA to play 32 matches against teams from 10 different conferences
2017 SFA Volleyball Schedule
NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Spanning four months and totaling 32 matches across four states, the 2017 Stephen F. Austin volleyball team revealed its 2017 regular season schedule on Wednesday afternoon.
Among the opposition for the Ladyjacks through the 2017 regular season are 28 teams from 10 different leagues including the Big East, SEC and American Athletic Conference.
"The 2017 schedule will challenge us every step of the way," said SFA head coach Debbie Humphreys who will begin her 30th season in charge of the Ladyjacks in 2017. "We are looking forward to the opportunity to compete against high level competition from a variety of conferences and we feel like the first four weeks of the schedule will have us prepared for Southland Conference play."
A 16-match non-conference schedule begins at Stetson University in DeLand, Fla., where the Ladyjacks open 2017 with three matches in the Stetson Invitational. SFA's first opponent of the season will be Florida Atlantic on Friday, August 25, before the Ladyjacks wrap up their weekend in Florida by facing off against Central Connecticut State and Stetson on Saturday, August 26.
Following a brief stop in Monroe, La., for a single match against Sun Belt Conference adversary Louisiana-Monroe on Wednesday, August 30, the Ladyjacks start a 15-match month of September at the Mississippi State Bulldog Invitational in Starkville, Miss.
While in the Magnolia State, SFA will battle South Florida and Grambling State on the opening day of the tournament (Friday, Sept. 1) before finishing its four-match slate by taking on Tulane and the host Bulldogs on Saturday, Sept. 2.
After facing eight opponents across three different states during the first quarter of their regular season, the Ladyjacks return to Texas where they will set up shop in Shelton Gym for five consecutive matches. The team's home debut will be on Friday, Sept. 8, when the Ladyjacks play Texas Southern and Tulsa on the opening day of the Holiday Inn Express SFA Volleyball Invitational. The following day, SFA closes out its home tournament by taking on Colgate and Little Rock. That five-match stand in Shelton Gym concludes with a visit from former Southland Conference opponent Texas State on Tuesday, Sept. 12.
SFA won't have to travel far to close out its non-conference schedule as the team head south to Rice University in Houston, Texas, for a three-match tournament. The Ladyjacks begin play in the Rice Invitational with a Friday afternoon matchup against Georgetown on Sept. 15 and close things out the following day with showdowns against Arkansas State and Rice.
The quest for the Ladyjacks' first Southland Conference regular season championship since 2014 begins in Shelton Gym on Thursday, Sept. 21 when the team welcomes Central Arkansas to the facility to start league play. That battle with the Sugar Bears kicks off a stretch of 16 consecutive league matches and SFA's opening weekend of Southland Conference play concludes with a visit from Northwestern State on Saturday, Sept. 23. The team's final September match is set to take place in Houston, Texas, on Saturday, Sept. 30 when the Ladyjacks battle Houston Baptist in their first Southland Conference road match of the season.
Exactly half of SFA's 10 October matches will take place in Shelton Gym, beginning with a Wednesday evening visit from New Orleans on Oct. 4. From there, SFA hits the road for three consecutive matches by heading to Lamar (Oct. 7), Incarnate Word (Oct. 12), and two-time defending Southland Conference champion Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (Oct. 14).
Following that road trip, the Ladyjacks play host to three Southland Conference opponents over the span of five days when Southeastern Louisiana (Oct. 17), McNeese (Oct. 19) and Nicholls (Oct. 21) all cross the border into Texas to do battle with SFA.
Following a stretch of 18-straight matches in the state of Texas, the Ladyjacks head to Louisiana and start a two-match swing by playing at New Orleans on Thursday, Oct. 26 before concluding their weekend with a Saturday afternoon stop in Hammond, La., to play Southeastern Louisiana on the 28th. On Halloween night in Nacogdoches, SFA gets a second shot at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi to close out the October slate.
The Ladyjacks' regular season schedule concludes in November with Southland Conference road matches at Abilene Christian (Nov. 2) and longtime Piney Woods rival Sam Houston State (Nov. 4) before SFA returns to Shelton Gym for its regular season finale against Lamar (Nov. 11).
