NACOGDOCHES, Texas -- The SFA Track and Field team are gearing up for their last chance to tune things up before they head into Championship season. The Lumberjacks head out for the two-day Bobcat Classic on Friday, April 28 and Saturday, April 29 in San Marcos, Texas.
The first event of the Bobcat Classic is the Women's hammer throw, which starts at 3:00 p.m. Friday afternoon. Freshman Maggie Okul has the current team-high throw for the Lumberjacks, with sophomore Tierra Wilson and senior Kami Stockett right behind the freshman. The men's hammer will begin after the women are complete. Senior Derek Orlando has taken command of the men's throws after finishing seventh at last week's Michael Johnson Invitational. Senior Dillon Branson and sophomore David Castillo will also be looking to improve their throwing marks before the SLC Championship.
The women's pole vault, javelin and men's long jump are all scheduled to start at 6:00 p.m. Freshmen Katie Simms and Anna Schuering will be representing the vaulting crew, while senior Madde Kaufmann and freshman Caitlin Lennon will be the front runners for the women's javelin throw. For the men's long jump, sophomore Isaiah Pittman will be trying to lengthen his already dominating performance at the top of the conference. He now sits 53rd in the nation for his 24-11.25 jump.
The first running events will be the 3000-meter steeplechase that takes place Friday evening with the women at 8:30 p.m. and men at 8:50 p.m. Larry Deramus will once again be running for the men, while freshman Taryn Surratt, junior Brittany Innis, and senior Bridgette Kozar will be competing for the women.
Saturday's events get underway at 10:00 a.m. with the men's high jump, followed by the women's discus. The women's shot put and women's triple jump are slated for a 3:30p.m. start with men to follow in each event.
The track will get heated up at 3:00 p.m. with the women's 4x100 meter relay, men's to come after, and then the 1,500 meter races will start. The hurdles and sprints will dominate the track around 3:35 p.m. with the 5,000 meter races and the 4x400 relay capping the meet at 6:05 p.m.
The SLC second ranked men's 4x100 squad of Khalil Lacey, Jared Love, Tedrick Hawkins, and Aaron Piper will look to improve their 40:54 time this weekend. Sophomore Dominque Jackson also sits second in the conference for the women's 400-meter hurdles.
