PALM DESERT, Calif. – Stephen F. Austin posted a 19-over 307 over the first 18 holes of the Wyoming Desert Classic as the Lumberjacks sit 18th among the 22 teams competing in Palm Desert, California.

Facing arguably its most challenging field of the season, SFA’s 307 is two shots back of both Fresno State and South Dakota State, both of which are tied for 16th with a 17-over 305. The ‘Jacks sit among a handful of teams that will be jockeying for position on Saturday as just eight strokes separate SFA from eighth-place Loyola Marymount (11-over 299) heading into the second 18 holes.
Individually, senior Major Monzingo paced SFA with a 3-over 75, sitting tied for 41st in the standings. Monzingo opened with a 2-over 38 on the opening nine holes and a 1-over 37 on the back nine, finishing with a birdie on hole nine. He is one shot better than Baxter Ward’s 4-over 76 as the senior paced SFA over the final nine holes, shooting an even-par 36 to rebound from his 4-over 40 to start the day.
Sophomore Angelo Leyvani is two shots off Monzingo’s pace, registering a 5-over 77 after leading the Lumberjacks through the first nine holes with a 1-over 37. Senior Cory Brown posted a 7-over 79 with freshman Zach Sudinsky carding a 10-over 82 through the opening 18 holes.
10th-ranked Oregon holds a commanding seven stroke lead after round one as the Ducks posted a 6-under 282, seven shots better than TCU’s 1-over 289. Number 24 Colorado (3-over 291) is third with fifth-ranked Texas Tech (4-over 292) sitting fourth and Kansas and Cal-State Fullerton (5-over 293) tying for fifth.
SFA will get its second round of the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate underway beginning at 10:40 a.m. CT, beginning its tee times from hole one along with South Dakota State, UT-Arlington and Oral Roberts. Sudinsky will be the first Lumberjack to tee off, progressing in 10 minute increments until Monzingo’s 11:20 a.m. CT tee time.
