Full CoSIDA Academic All-American Release
AUSTIN, Texas – After an outstanding season on the pitch, Stephen F. Austin sophomore defender Carli Arthurs is now the recipient of academic acclaim of the highest order. The Lewisville, Texas native has been recognized as a CoSIDA Academic All-American Third Team selection for the first time in her career, per a release from the national office on Thursday.
Arthurs' selection to the Academic All-America team comes on the heels of her selection as an Academic All-District honoree nearly a month ago. Arthurs was a strong candidate for the award's selection committee, as she started every game for the Ladyjacks at left back on the way to a 12-8-1 season and a chance to play for the Southland Conference Tournament title. Her success in the classroom is more deserving still, as she has maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA while majoring in mathematics.
As a sophomore, Arthurs was in her first year of eligibility for the award, and is one of just two sophomores selected to the Academic All-American teams on the women's side among the 33 athletes selected. She also becomes the third Academic All-American selection from SFA's women's soccer program in the six years under head coach Wally Crittenden, following the selection of Brooke Dunnigan and Kylie Louw. Arthurs was also the lone Southland Conference soccer player to receive All-America honors.
On the field for the Ladyjacks, Arthurs more than held her own on the left side of the defensive backline, anchoring what would prove to be the Southland's stingiest defense. The 'Jacks would surrender just eight goals in conference play, all while notching six conference shutouts. Arthurs also collected two goals and two assists while starting all 21 games.
