CoSIDA Academic All-District® Football Team
GREENWOOD, Ind. – For the third-straight year Stephen F. Austin football senior safety Marlon Walls has been named College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District® First Team, the organization announced Thursday. Walls will attempt to become a two-time CoSIDA Academic All-American after becoming the first football player in program history to claim CoSIDA First-Team Academic All-American honors in 2016.
A native of Pearland, Texas (Pearland H.S.), Walls was selected as one of 13 finalists for the prestigious National Football Foundation (NFF) & College Hall of Fame's 2017 William V. Campbell Trophy®, the academic equivalent of the coveted Heisman Trophy, on Nov. 1. Becoming a member of the elite NFF National Scholar-Athlete Class, Walls will receive an $18,000 postgraduate scholarship and will travel to New York City for the 60th NFF Annual Awards Dinner on Tuesday, Dec. 5. His accomplishments will be highlighted in front of one of the most powerful audiences in all of sports as the event will be streamed live on ESPN3.
The reigning Southland Conference Football Student-Athlete of the Year, Walls owns a perfect 4.0 grade point average through three and a half years of study at SFA and will graduate a semester early in December with his undergraduate degree in engineering physics. Minoring in mathematics, he has been named to the President's List every semester of his collegiate career and was the recipient of the SFA physics department's Brian Patrick Hanson Memorial Scholarship in 2016.
Walls became the first football player in school history to be named a finalist for the Campbell Trophy and a national-scholar athlete. He is the only finalist for the national award with an unblemished 4.0 GPA.
This past summer Walls completed an internship at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory. While there, he joined other students from institutions such as MIT, Stanford and Yale to assist with the Europa Propulsion Module, a NASA space probe joint project.
On the field, Walls is the Lumberjacks' fourth-leading tackler with 51 total tackles and 26 solo stops. He also has three pass breakups and a fumble recovery, not to mention two tackles of loss for negative three yards.
Walls is one of just nine Southland football players to appear on the CoSIDA Academic All-District® Team.
The CoSIDA Academic All-District® Football Team recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom. First-team Academic All-District® honorees advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America® Team ballot, with first and second-team Academic All-America honorees to be announced in December.
SFA wraps up its 2017 season this Saturday at Northwestern State in the 52nd Battle for the Piney Woods in Natchitoches, Louisiana. Kickoff from inside of Turpin Stadium is slated for 3 p.m.
