Ladyjacks go a perfect 3-0 in bracket play Sunday to capture seventh place at Wisconsin-Whitewater’s Warhawk Classic, complete their fall tournament schedule
KENOSHA, Wis. – The Stephen F. Austin bowling team went an unblemished 3-0 Sunday and placed in the top 10 for the 47th consecutive tournament at NCAA Division III Wisconsin-Whitewater's Warhawk Classic in Kenosha, Wisconsin. The Ladyjacks finished seventh among 20 teams at the three-day event, registering wins over Maryville University, 14th-ranked Saint Francis University (Pa.) and No. 8 Fairleigh Dickinson in three best 4-of-7 Baker Matches Sunday. SFA finished the weekend with a 6-7 record and a pinfall total of 12,492 at the Sheridan Lanes. The tournament completes SFA's fall slate of play.
Fellow Southland Bowling League member and third-ranked Arkansas State took home the Warhawk Classic title after going 9-4 and defeating top-seeded and No. 2 ranked Nebraska 4-3 in the championship match. Runner-up Nebraska finished the tournament with a 12-1 mark, while SBL member and fourth-ranked Vanderbilt placed third with a 4-2 win over top-ranked and defending national champion McKendree University.
After dropping their first game by a narrow margin of 168-164 to Maryville, seniors Kelsi Anderson (San Antonio, Texas) and Morgan Reising (Lewisville, Texas), juniors Paige Beeney (Salado, Texas) and Dakotah Hazlewood (Capron, Ill.), and freshman Sarah Gill (Attleboro, Mass.) took games two and three by counts of 181-161 and 249-172 to go ahead 2-1 in the match. Despite a 190-188 game four falter, the Ladyjacks claimed game five 209-143 and game six 211-200 to secure the first-round win over the 10th-seeded Saints.
In the second round, SFA handled No. 7 seed Saint Francis University (Pa.) 4-1 behind Anderson, Reising, Beeney, Hazlewood and Gill. The lone game loss in the match for the Ladyjacks came in the third game as SFA was only able to collect a 166. However, the Ladyjacks started and finished strong, bowling a 227 in the opening game and a 224 in game five to clinch the match.
SFA had its best performance in the final match of the day for seventh place, sweeping fifth-seeded Fairleigh Dickinson 4-0. With the same lineup as the first two matches, the Ladyjacks posted their highest score of the day in game three as they picked up a lopsided 248-154 win. SFA closed out the tournament by bowling a 208 in game four to complete the sweep and earn seventh place at the event.
A pair of Ladyjack bowlers ranked in the top 25 of the individual standings at the Warhawk Classic after Saturday's five traditional team matches. Senior Stephanie Schwartz (Racine, Wis.) finished 24th after claiming 1,002 total pins and averaging a game score of 200.4, while freshman Sarah Voiers (Chesterton, Ind.) finished 25th with a 998 total and a 199.6 average.
