Ladyjacks open up play at Wisconsin-Whitewater’s Warhawk Classic with a pinfall total of 4,748 and a 1-4 record, sit in seventh place after day one
KENOSHA, Wis. – Day one of play at NCAA Division III Wisconsin-Whitewater's Warhawk Classic in Kenosha, Wisconsin, did not go the way of the Stephen F. Austin bowling team as the Ladyjacks went 1-4 and sit in seventh place. SFA picked up just one win on the opening day of the three-day tournament held at the Sheridan Lanes, tallying a pinfall total of 4,748 in five, five-game Baker matches.
Fellow Southland Bowling League member and third-ranked Arkansas State leads the 20-team event after claiming 5,211 total pins, while No. 2 Nebraska is in second place with a pinfall count of 5,203 and a perfect 5-0 record.
The Ladyjacks defeated 14th-ranked Saint Francis University (Pa.) by a comfortable margin in their fourth match of the day but dropped their opening three matches. The day got started with a 955-921 defeat at the hands of No. 16 LIU Brooklyn and finished up with a 1,074-955 loss to top-ranked McKendree University.
Against the Blackbirds of LIU Brooklyn, SFA was only able to tally one game win, a 185-134 game four, as seniors Kelsi Anderson (San Antonio, Texas) and Morgan Reising (Lewisville, Texas), freshmen Dakota Faichnie (Innisfil, Ontario, Canada) and Sarah Gill (Attleboro, Mass.), and senior Stephanie Schwartz (Racine, Wis.) led the way. The Ladyjacks took on Maryville University, SFA's lone unranked opponent of the day, in their second match but dropped the first four games before finding their way to a convincing 232-132 game five win.
Second-ranked Nebraska totaled 1,090 pins against SFA in the third match of the day as the Ladyjacks quickly found themselves in a 2-0 hole after the first two games. With freshman Sarah Voiers (Chesterton, Ind.), Reising, junior Dakotah Hazlewood, Gill and Schwartz starting, and junior Paige Beeney (Salado, Texas) subbing in, SFA took game three 225-199 but that would be it. The Ladyjacks picked up their lone victory of the day in match four with an 81-pin win over Saint Francis (Pa.).
Behind Voiers, Beeney, Hazlewood, Gill and Schwartz, SFA won four out of the five games to claim the match by a tally of 982-901. The lone game loss in the match came in the second game when the Ladyjacks were outdone 232-213. With head coach Amber Lemke going with the same lineup as in match four, SFA could not rebound from a 0-3 start against No. 1 ranked and defending NCAA champion McKendree. The Ladyjacks took game four by a narrow margin of 215-214 for their only game win in the match but it was not nearly enough.
SFA is back in action Saturday with five traditional team matches getting underway at 9:35 a.m. The Ladyjacks will face 15th-ranked Adelphi to open up the day's play, before taking on Lincoln University (Mo.), No. 9 Sacred Heart, No. 8 Fairleigh Dickinson and No. 10 Central Missouri.
Bracket play will conclude the tournament on Sunday with teams' pinfall total from Friday and Saturday determining seeding. Sunday's bracket play will begin at 8:30 a.m. and will feature three best 4-of-7 Baker matches.
