Full Southland Conference Player of the Week Release
FRISCO, Texas—Two strong performances—one on either side of the ball— helped lift the Stephen F. Austin women's soccer team over rival Sam Houston State on Friday in double overtime. For their part in the victory, freshman midfielder Katelyn Termini and sophomore left back Carli Arthurs were named the Southland Conference Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively, per a release from the conference office on Monday.
Termini came through with one of the most crucial single game performances of the Ladyjack's season thus far, scoring a brace of goals in the victory. Her first strike came in the 86th minute of regulation, an equalizer that returned life to an SFA side that had fallen behind 1-0 just minutes prior. After staving off a crushing defeat for the Ladyjacks with that goal, Termini put away the game-winner in the game's second overtime session on a wonderful strike from 20 yards out. The brace of goals gave Termini six to date in her freshman campaign, a figured that ranks on SFA.
An everyday fixture at left back for the Ladyjacks, Arthurs showed why she has earned the spot with her play in Friday's victory. As captain of the defensive backline, she led an effort that held the capable offense of Sam Houston State to just 11 total shots, five of which were on goal. SFA was stalwart in the defense for 79 minutes of Friday's contest before the Bearkats scored, and held them scoreless for the remainder of regulation and both overtime periods to seal the win. Arthurs also came through on the other end of the field, assisting Termini on the golden goal in the second overtime with her first assist of the season.
Friday's victory moved SFA into a second place finish in the conference standings, and clinched the number two seed in this weekend's Southland Conference Tournament. As such, the Ladyjacks will face the Bearkats for the second time in six days as the opening match of the tournament. The Jacks have posted an overall record of 11-7 this season, and an 8-3 mark in conference play.
Alex Latham of Northwestern State was named the Goalkeeper of the Week.
