Women’s Golf Finishes Third at Bearkat Invitational

The Ladyjacks post a third-place finish at the Bearkat Invitational with a 58-over 910, their lowest score and best finish through three tournaments this fall
HUNTSVILLE, Texas – For the first time this fall, the Stephen F. Austin women's golf team posted a top-five finish with a 58-over 910 at Sam Houston State's Bearkat Invitational in Huntsville, Texas. Placing third in the 11-team field, the Ladyjacks sat in third place after each of the three rounds and capped off the tournament by shooting a 23-over 307 in wet and rainy conditions Tuesday afternoon. SFA had posted a 21-over 305 in the opening round Monday and a 14-over 298 in round two.
The Ladyjacks finished ahead of fellow Southland Conference members Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (78-over 930), Incarnate Word (80-over 932) and McNeese (102-over 954). Host Sam Houston State claimed the team title after tying for first place with Houston Baptist, both with a 39-over 891, but won the tiebreaker as the Bearkats' fifth player finished with a lower score than that of the Huskies' fifth finisher.
Led by a seventh-place tie from sophomore Alexandra Batista (Trophy Club, Texas), SFA saw four players take home top-20 finishes. Batista shot a 6-over 77 in the final round Tuesday and finished with a two-day total of 13-over 226. Redshirt juniors Jamee Jorgensen (Boerne, Texas) and Erica Lautensack (Arlington, Texas) both tied for 11th with three-round scores of 15-over 228. Lautensack rose 12 spots on the leaderboard between Monday and Tuesday as she improved her score by two strokes, shooting a 3-over 74 in the final round. Sophomore Haleigh Jordan (San Antonio, Texas) tied for 18th with an 18-over 231 total.
Competing as an individual, sophomore Paola Cortes (Allen, Texas) finished tied for 26th with a three-round score of 22-over 235, while true freshman Alexis Szewczyk (McKinney, Texas) tallied a 25-over 238 to place 31st.
Sam Houston State's Jenna Phillips took home the individual crown with an even-par 213 as Houston Baptist's Lexi Brooks and the Bearkats' Hanna Alberto tied for second with a 1-over 214.

The Ladyjacks have nearly two weeks off from competition before heading to Monroe, Louisiana, for the Fred Marx Invitational hosted by Louisiana-Monroe. The two-day, 54-hole tournament will take place Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 16-17 at the Bayou Desiard Country Club.
