Senior running back Kijana Amous claims SFA’s second Southland Player of the Week award this season after gaining 185 offensive yards during Saturday’s win over Houston Baptist
Southland Conference's Release
FRISCO, Texas – Senior running back Kijana Amous has been named Southland Conference Offensive Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday morning. Claiming 185 of Stephen F. Austin's 483 total offensive yards in Saturday's 27-10 home win over Houston Baptist, Amous accounted for 38 percent of the Lumberjacks' offense.
A native of Mansfield, Texas (Legacy H.S.), Amous was sensational in both the run game and as a receiver. He grabbed a career-high seven receptions for 102 yards, while rushing for a game-high 83 yards on 16 carries. The 102 receiving yards were the most by any SFA player in a game this season. In addition to scoring two of the Lumberjacks' three touchdowns, both in the second half, Amous had a 54-yard catch and run in the second quarter that set up a field goal.
Amous' two touchdown runs were pivotal in the contest as his first, a three-yard scamper, came with 6:08 to go in the third quarter and gave SFA a two possession lead at 20-7. His second touchdown rush pretty much sealed the victory for the 'Jacks, scoring from six yards out to cap an eight-play, 70-yard drive and make it a 27-10 game. Amous also had a 25-yard rush in the second quarter, his longest run of the game.
Through eight games this season Amous has been SFA's leading rusher, accumulating 393 yards on the ground with a team-high five touchdowns. He is averaging 86.2 all-purpose yards per game.
Amous becomes the second SFA football player to earn a player of the week plaudit in 2017, joining sophomore safety Alize Ward (San Diego, Calif.) who claimed Southland Defensive Player of the Week honors on Sept. 18. It is the first player of the week award for Amous and marks the first offensive player of the week accolade for the 'Jacks since Hunter Taylor was named for the weekly honor on Sept. 26, 2016.

The 'Jacks will take on their final in-state opponent this season Saturday, Oct. 28 in Beaumont, Texas, when they face the Cardinals of Lamar. Kickoff from Provost Umphrey Stadium is slated for 6 p.m. The game will be streamed live on ESPN3 and the ESPN app.
