NACOGDOCHES, Texas – After three weeks off from competition, the Stephen F. Austin men's golf team will take to the links once again for its third tournament of the fall season Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 23-24. The Lumberjacks will compete in the Little Rock Intercollegiate at the Chenal Country Club in Little Rock, Arkansas. It will be the first of back-to-back weeks of competition for SFA in the Natural State.
The two-day, 54-hole tournament features a par-72 course that encompasses 7,326 yards of play with the first two rounds taking place Monday followed by the third and final round Tuesday. Each day of play will get underway at 8 a.m. with a shotgun start.
The 10-team field includes fellow Southland Conference members Central Arkansas and Houston Baptist. In addition to host and reigning tournament champion Little Rock, 46th-ranked Arkansas State out of the Sun Belt Conference will be the highest-ranked team in the field. Other competing teams are Illinois State, UT Arlington, Dayton, Seton Hall and Bradley, while Big 12 Oklahoma has several individual competitors in the tournament as well.
True freshman Max Kettler (Southlake, Texas), junior Angelo Leyvani (San Antonio, Texas), senior Blake Stock (Hewitt, Texas), freshman Andy Lopez (Dallas, Texas) and freshman Steven Fabik (Carrollton, Texas) will tee off from holes 9-12 Monday morning and are paired with players from Seton Hall and individual competitors from Oklahoma and Dayton. Junior Jake Hendrix (Austin, Texas) will compete in his first tournament of the year as an individual, teeing off from hole 15 and paired with Michael Mounce of Bradley and Carlos Trevino of Houston Baptist.
The 'Jacks did not compete in the tournament a year ago and are looking to improve on their 11th-place finish at the Louisville Cardinal Challenge the first weekend of October. SFA began its 2017 fall season with a second-place showing at the Jim Rivers Intercollegiate in Louisiana, shooting an 8-under 856 in the 14-team field. Three different Lumberjack golfers have earned top-10 finishes through the first two tournaments, including a runner-up placement by Leyvani at the Jim Rivers Intercollegiate where he shot a 7-under 209. In their first collegiate tournaments, freshmen Lopez and Kettler also posted top-10 finishes at the event with three-round totals of 3-under 213 and 2-under 214, respectively, tying for seventh and ninth.
Live scoring for the tournament will be available at Golfstat.com.
Getting to know Max Kettler
A native of Southlake, Texas, Kettler was a first-team all-district, all-region and all-state performer at Carroll High School, placing fourth at the Texas 6A State Championship his senior year and helping his team claim a 6A state title as a sophomore. In his first two collegiate golf tournaments, Kettler has posted top-10 finishes. He tied for ninth (2-under 214) at the Jim Rivers Intercollegiate before finishing 10th (2-over 218) as SFA's top golfer at the Louisville Cardinal Challenge. For his play in September, Kettler claimed honorable mention for the Southland's Golfer of the Month recognition.
Why did you choose to come and play at SFA?
"I came to play at SFA because I love the school and wanted to get a different college experience away from the city."
Who is the most influential person in your life, and why?
"Besides my parents, who I love so deeply and can't thank enough for always giving me love and support, I would have to say my swing instructor: Joey Wuertemberger. I wouldn't be here in my golf career without his help and I always listen to his advice about golf and life decisions."
What are your top three to five values in life?
"My most important value in life is work ethic. Regardless if it is life or golf, if you work hard one day it will pay dividends. The second value that I hold true is determination. I believe that if you give fully into the process, then you will achieve it. Basically, don't do anything halfway, be fully engaged in what you do. The last value that I live by is respect. You must respect other people and their beliefs but at the same time, demand that they respect you and your ideas."
What is your best life lesson learned in college and/or golf?
"The best life lesson learned in golf has to be patience. There was a time in my career when I was working hard, but I wasn't getting rewarded for my hard work. People who didn't work as hard were doing better than me. But I continued to work hard, I stayed determined and I also stayed patient, because I knew that one day all my hard work would pay off. Now if you know me well you're probably thinking, 'What is Max trying to say here, he is the least patient person on Earth?'. What I'm saying is to continue to grind, because if you're doing all the right things one day you'll be rewarded accordingly."
What is your dream job?
"My dream job is to be President of the United States."
Who would play you in a movie/TV series?
"I would have Kevin Spacey play me because he is the best actor on this planet. He would need to do his accent from House of Cards though."
What is your biggest fear? Is there a personal story about why?
"My biggest fear are ghosts. When I was younger, I would watch these ghost shows that creeped me out. I believe in the paranormal, so I wasn't the kid to watch this stuff and dismiss it as fake or staged. I believed that these ghosts were real and after I watched the ghost episodes, I believed that the ghosts were in the house."
What is one thing that no one knows about Max?
"What people don't know about me is that I was born in Russia."
