CHOUDRANT, La. – Stephen F. Austin opened up its 2016-17 campaign in northern Louisiana, posting a 22-over 598 through the first two rounds of the 2016 Jim Rivers Intercollegiate, hosted by Louisiana Tech.
The Lumberjacks opened up the day with a 16-over 304 through the opening 18 holes and were tied for 11th after the conclusion of round one. Sophomore Angelo Leyvani and freshman Zach Sudinsky posted the Lumberjack low rounds with 2-over 74s, four strokes better than junior Blake Stock and sophomore Jacob Hendrix’s 6-over 78s.
Round two was much more conducive for the Lumberjacks as SFA shaved 10 strokes off its opening round total, posting a 6-over 294. Sudinsky registered the first par round of his collegiate career with a 72, followed by Leyvani’s 1-over 73 and a 2-over 74 from senior Baxter Ward.
Through two rounds, Sudinsky is on the doorstep of his first career top-20 finish, sitting tied for 21st overall with a 2-over 146. He leads Leyvani by one stroke as the sophomore’s 3-over 147 is tied for 25th in the individual standings.
Stock currently sits in third among the SFA scorecard with a 9-over 153 with Ward and Hendrix rounding out the scoring as each fired an 11-over 155. Competing as an individual, senior Major Monzingo held pace with Sudinsky on day one, firing an even-par 72 in round one and a 2-over 74 in round two and is tied for 21st at 2-over 146.
After ending round one tied with Southland Conference foe Abilene Christian for 11th overall, SFA separated itself from the Wildcats by three strokes (25-over 601) and is eight shots better than 12th-place Incarnate Word (30-over 606). The Lumberjacks head into Tuesday’s final round one shot back of host Louisiana Tech (21-over 597) and will have some work to do to catch the teams further ahead.
After 36 holes, Louisiana-Monroe holds the team lead with a 3-under 573, one shot better than SLC foe Central Arkansas’ 2-under 274. Two other conference opponents sit among the top five with Lamar (2-over 578) in third and Houston Baptist (4-over 580) tied with Southern Miss for fourth. Other Southland Conference teams include Southeastern Louisiana (14-over 590) in seventh and New Orleans (42-over 618) in 13th.
Tuesday’s final round will get underway at approximately 8 a.m., pending foggy conditions which delayed the start of Monday’s action. SFA will play with Abilene Christian in the final round pairings with full results posted at SFAJacks.com as they become available.
