SFA to Compete in NCAA West Regionals Beginning on Thursday

NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin men’s track and field team will send 10 individuals and one relay to compete against the best athletes in the region at the 2016 NCAA Division I West Preliminary Round on Thursday, May 26 through Saturday, May 28. The three days of competition will take place at Rock Chalk Park on campus of the University of Kansas with qualifying individuals and relays advancing to the 2016 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Oregon from June 8-11.
Aaron Piper (100m), My’Lik Kerley (400m), Charles Mathenge (10,000m), Colby Mehmen (10,000m), Kerry Gleason (400m hurdles), Garrett Moore (400m hurdles), Cameron Meyer (pole vault), Daven Murphree (pole vault), Isaiah Pittman (long jump) and Trey Darty (long jump) will represent SFA individually while the men’s 4x400m relay also qualified. A combination of Kerley, Johnathan Joe, D’Lance Sharp, Will Gibson and Tedrick Hawkins will make up the mile relay team.
The assembly of SFA men will attempt to place in the top 12 in their respective events this weekend in order to make the cut for nationals in early June. The top 12 individuals and relays from both the East and West Prelims will automatically earn berths into the NCAA Championship field at the University of Oregon’s Historic Hayward Field.
All 10 individuals for the ‘Jacks will be in action on Thursday. Pittman and Darty will take flight in the men’s long jump first round starting at 3:30 p.m. Meyer and Murphree will follow in the men’s pole vault prelims beginning at 4:30 p.m. to cap SFA’s field event qualifiers.
A busy afternoon/evening on the track gets underway at 5:00 p.m. for the ‘Jacks when Gleason and Moore take off in the 400-meter hurdle first round. Piper will run in the opening round of the 100-meter dash at 6:55 p.m. before making way for Kerley in the 400m first round at 7:45 p.m. Mathenge and Mehmen will close day one in the men’s 10,000m semifinal scheduled for 9:40 p.m.
Quarterfinals of the 100m, 400m and 400m hurdles will take place on Friday evening. SFA’s dynamic 4x400 relay squad won’t race until the final event on Saturday evening. The 10th ranked Lumberjacks will step into the blocks beginning at 9:45 p.m. to close the weekend.
