Lumberjacks Head to Marshall Saturday For 2016 Road Scrimmage

NACOGDOCHES, Texas - For the third-straight year, Stephen F. Austin will take its show on the road, heading to Marshall, Texas Saturday for the second scrimmage of the spring season.
"This is something we enjoy doing each year as it serves a couple of purposes for our team," said head coach Clint Conque. "It’s a tremendous opportunity for our team to establish ourselves as East Texas’ university and East Texas’ football team, giving us an opportunity to showcase our program outside of Nacogdoches. It is also a good experience to take our guys out of their comfort zone and give our younger players their first experience of what a road game feels like.”
In 2014, Conque's first season at SFA, the 'Jacks held their road scrimmage at Lufkin High School, followed by a trip to Longview High School in 2015. Saturday's scrimmage will get underway at 4 p.m. at Marshall High School's Maverick Stadium and is free to the public.
There are a number of storylines heading into Saturday's scrimmage as a number of younger players should see some significant reps. Offensively, the offensive line and wide receiver positions remain wide open as departed seniors and injuries have provided prime opportunities for playing time while defensively, SFA looks to continue to shore up the linebackers and secondary positions. The kicking game will also be a major focus as the 'Jacks look to solidify the special teams units.
Following Saturday's scrimmage, the Lumberjacks will have one week of spring practices remaining, leading up to the 2016 Spring Game on Saturday, April 16th at Homer Bryce Stadium. The game will kick at 6 p.m., followed by a movie night as "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" will be shown on the brand new videoboard following the game. Both the spring game and movie night are free to attend.
