NACOGDOCHES, Texas – There were plenty of personal bests to go around for the Stephen F. Austin multi-event athletes on the first day of the 2016 Skechers Carl Kight Invitational on Thursday afternoon at Fletcher Garner Track. The men’s decathlon and the women’s heptathlon opened the three-day home meet for the ‘Jacks.
In five events through the halfway point of the decathlon, junior Hunter Key set three new event PRs to post a major day one personal best of 3,628 points. He leads five Lumberjacks in fourth place out of 14 athletes overall heading into Friday’s action.
Key started and ended the day strong on the track, placing second in the 100-meter dash (11.22) to begin the afternoon and closing with a first place effort in the 400m (50.11). In between track events, Key notched PRs in the long jump, shot put and high jump. He set marks of 21-4 (6.50m), 40-2.75 (12.26m) and 6-1.50 (1.87m) in each event, respectfully.
Freshmen Connor Wilbur, Tyji Yulee, Bradley Beaty and Tanner Parks all set new PRs throughout the day as well and will look to finish strong on Friday.
On the women’s side, freshman Jillian Turner leads the Ladyjacks in fourth place out of 12 participants in the heptathlon. She holds a day one total of 2,879 points after setting new personal bests in all four of the day’s events – the 100m hurdles, high jump, shot put and 200m.
Junior Madeline Kaufmann is also in good position, sitting in sixth place with 2,858 points. Sophomore teammate Laniya Taylor is right behind that total in seventh, compiling 2,837 points through four events.
Kaufmann used a throw of 38-4 (11.68m) to win the shot put and Taylor closed the evening with a winning time of 25.20 seconds in the 200-meter dash.
The decathlon will resume on Friday morning at 9:30 a.m., starting with the 110-meter hurdles while the heptathlon kicks back up with the long jump at noon. Individual field events also start on Friday as the hammer and pole vault are set for a 4:00 p.m. start. The distance carnival will take over the track and 7:15 p.m.
