NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Stephen F. Austin added to its long tradition of Lumberjacks transitioning to the professional football ranks Saturday as senior offensive lineman Terran Vaughn signed an undrafted free agent contract with the Oakland Raiders following the final round of the 2016 NFL Draft.
With Vaughn inking his contract with the Raiders, he becomes the 74th Lumberjack to sign a contract with an NFL team in program history, joining former Lumberjacks Josh Aubrey (Tennessee Titans), Willie Jefferson (Washington Redskins) and Gus Johnson (Atlanta Falcons) who are all currently on NFL active or practice squad rosters.
It also marks the second-straight year a ‘Jack signed an UDFA contract with the Raiders as Johnson initially signed with Oakland before heading to Dallas and Atlanta.
Vaughn was one of the cornerstones of one of the most veteran offensive lines in the nation last year as the Beaumont native played in 46 games during his Lumberjack career with 38 starts, primarily at the right guard position.
An honorable mention All-Southland Conference selection in 2014, Vaughn helped pave the way for some of the most prolific offensive teams in Lumberjack history as the ‘Jacks averaged at least 30 points a game for seven-straight seasons – tops in Division I – from 2008-2014. He also helped clear the way for Johnson and his record-breaking season in 2014 as the All-American was a Walter Payton Award finalist.
Along with fellow lineman Byron Williams, Vaughn attended the NFL Regional Combine in Houston in February and caught the attention of pro scouts, tying for the top 40 time by an offensive lineman at 5.20. He also was among the top linemen in strength and agility drills, helping him land the attention of the Raiders.
Vaughn reports to Oakland next week to begin OTAs, looking to land a spot on the Raiders’ training camp roster this July. He will try to become the sixth Lumberjack to suit up for the Raiders in either an exhibition or regular season game, joining SFA Hall of Famer Terrance Shaw, George Shirkey, James Nixon, Leo Araguz and Joey Wylie.
