BASTROP, Texas – Another strong showing by freshman Angelo Leyvani paces Stephen F. Austin as Leyvani’s 1-under 143 paced the Lumberjacks over the opening two rounds of the Jim West Intecollegiate. Leyvani is tied for 15th overall while SFA sits eighth among the 13-team field with a 9-over 585.
Leyvani, who has registered back-to-back top-10 finishes, opened up the day with a respectable 1-over 73 in round one, sitting among the top-25 of the individual leaders. The freshman then came out firing, posting a 2-under 70 in round two, which included seven birdies in round two, to move into the top-20 with the 1-under 143.
Senior Luke Sheehan had the fast start of the day for the Lumberjacks, opening up competition with a 3-under 69 in round one, which included 12 pars and five birdies, with a double bogey on the par-three sixth his only blemish. Sheehan then struggled in the afternoon round, posting a 4-over 76 to sit at 1-over 145, tied for 21st overall.
SFA opened the day with a 7-over 295, highlighted by the 69 from Sheehan and the 73 from Leyvani. The Lumberjacks then shaved five shots off their round two score with a 2-over 290 with Leyvani’s 70 leading the way. Senior Nathan Weant registered an even-par 72, putting him at 4-over 148 after round two, with juniors Cory Brown and Major Monzingo posting a 2-over 74.
Brown sits at 7-over 151 through 36 holes with Monzingo at 11-over 155. But Monzingo came on strong over the back nine of round two, posting back-to-back eagles on the par-five 14th and the par-four 15th, helping him shoot a 1-under 35 over the back nine. Junior Baxter Ward also recorded a 12-over 156 competing as an individual.
With 36 holes down, SFA remains in prime position to make a run up the leaderboard as the Lumberjacks are just one shot back of seventh-place UT-Arlington (8-over 584) and are three strokes back of sixth-place Texas State (6-over 582).
Through the opening two rounds, St. Mary’s holds the team lead with a 14-under 562, holding a seven-stroke lead on Southland Conference foe McNeese State (7-under 569). Rice and North Texas (2-under 574) are tied for third with Arkansas-Little Rock (3-over 579) rounding out the top-five.
Tuesday’s final round gets underway with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. SFA will play with UT-Arlington and ninth-place Lamar (10-over 586) in the final round pairings, teeing off from holes 5-9.
