McKINNEY, Texas – With the first two rounds of the Southland Conference Championships in the books, Stephen F. Austin sits sixth among the 12-team field with a 28-over 604 through the opening two rounds. Freshman Angelo Leyvani paced the ‘Jacks with a 2-over 146 through the first 36 holes of the championship, tied for eighth individually.
With less-than-ideal weather forecasted for the majority of the week, the decision was made to get as many holes done on Monday as possible as the 12-team field played rounds one and two at Stonebridge Ranch Country Club.
In round one, SFA shot a 12-over 300 as the Lumberjacks sat seventh after the opening 36 holes. Senior Luke Sheehan carded the low score of round one for the Lumberjacks, finishing with a 2-over 74, going even over the opening nine holes including an eagle on the par-five third. Junior Baxter Ward was a shot off the pace with a 3-over 75, matching Sheehan’s eagle on hole three, with Leyvani settling in with a 3-over 75 as well to tie Ward after the opening 18 holes.
In the afternoon round, SFA posted a 16-over 304, adding four strokes to its opening round score, but moved up one spot in the team standings, settling in at 28-over 604. The ‘Jacks were respectable over the back nine, shooting a combined 10-over par, but struggled on the front side, carding an 18-over par on holes 1-9.
Leyvani made his move in round two, shooting a 1-under 71 over the second 18 holes, registering four birdies and 11 pars to move into the tie for eighth with a 2-over 146. Senior Nathan Weant finished with a 5-over 77 in round two, one shot better than Sheehan’s 6-over 78. Sophomore Tony Underwood matched Sheehan with a 78, helping push the ‘Jacks into the number six spot.
Leyvani’s 2-over 146 is six shots better than Sheehan’s 8-over 152 as the senior is tied for 24th overall. Weant is one stroke behind with a 9-over 153, tied for 28th, with Underwood (12-over 156) and Ward (13-over 159) rounding out the Lumberjack scorecard.
SFA sits right in the middle of the pack of handful of teams after 36 holes, one shot back of fifth-place Abilene Christian (27-over 603). The ‘Jacks lead seventh-place Incarnate Word (29-over 605) by one shot, sitting two shots better than eighth-place Central Arkansas (30-over 606) and four shots ahead of ninth-place New Orleans (32-over 608).
After round one, McNeese sits in the drivers’ seat at 3-over 579, leading second-place Southeastern Louisiana (14-over 590) by 11 shots. Sam Houston State (16-over 592) is third overall with Lamar (18-over) 594 and Abilene Christian sitting ahead of the ‘Jacks in the top-five.
The final round of the 2016 Southland Conference Championships gets underway with tee times starting at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday morning. SFA will be in the third bunch to tee off, playing with Abilene Christian and Lamar in the final round pairings. The ‘Jacks will get their day started with Ward’s 9:00 a.m. tee time, leading up to Leyvani getting his round started at 9:36 a.m.
