Lumberjacks Set To Open Spring Football Practices Wednesday

NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Stephen F. Austin is getting set to begin its third spring football schedule under head coach Clint Conque, getting underway Wednesday, March 23rd. The `Jacks will conduct a 15-practice slate, wrapping up with the 2016 spring game on Saturday, April 16th at 6 p.m.
"I'm very excited to get this spring schedule going and build on the successful offseason we've had," Conque said. "We've made tremendous gains in the weight room and conditioning and I'm eager to see how that transitions into an improvement, as well as confidence, on the practice field. Our players are starting to fully understand how important the process is, which is something I've tried to instill since coming here."
The spring schedule will alternate between the SFA grass practice fields north of the SFA Fieldhouse and Homer Bryce Stadium with all practices open to the public. In addition, the `Jacks will host a pair of scrimmages, the first of which comes on Saturday, April 2nd at Homer Bryce Stadium followed by another in Marshall on Saturday, April 9th. It is the third-straight season Conque will hold an off-campus scrimmage following trips to Lufkin (2014) and Longview (2015).
SFA is coming off a disappointing 4-7 mark in 2015 but the Lumberjacks are eager to get back on the practice field as the Lumberjacks return 17 starters and 42 letterwinners in 2016. In addition, the `Jacks have over a dozen redshirt freshmen, as well as the six offseason transfers, all of which will be looked to to provide some immediate competition and depth across the board.
Another key for SFA remains consistency in the coaching ranks as nearly all of Conque's staff from the past two seasons return. The lone change that occurred in the offseason was the hiring of Gary Crowton as SFA's offensive coordinator with this spring serving as the preparation time for Crowton to install his new offensive scheme in Nacogdoches.
