KENOSHA, Wis. – After a sluggish opening round, Stephen F. Austin rebounded on day two, posting a 4-1 record and moving to third at the Wisconsin-Whitewater Warhawk Classic. The Ladyjacks now sit at 6-4 through the first two rounds of the event and have tallied 10,083 total pins, earning themselves a spot in Sunday’s championship bracket.
A number of Ladyjacks had strong individual performances, led by sophomore Stephanie Schwartz who made the most of her Wisconsin homecoming. Schwartz, who hails 20 minutes up the road in Racine, captured the individual title with a 230.2 average, eclipsing the 200-pin mark in four of her five games on the day. It is the second individual tournament title of Schwartz’s career as she earns all-tournament honors for the second time this season.
The other Ladyjack making a Wisconsin homecoming also made the most of her trip home as senior Danielle Lynn earned all-tournament honors, finising fourth in the individual standings with a 214.8 average. The Milton native, which is roughly an hour and a half west of Kenosha, posted three 200 pin games, including a career-best 279 in the final match of the day, tying for the highest score of all competitors on the afternoon.
Freshman Paige Beeney recorded a top-20 showing as well, placing 13th overall with a 207.0 average and three games of 200 pins or better. Junior Paige Kraushaar just missed a top-20 showing as well for SFA, placing 23rd while averaging 193.2 per game.
Competing in five traditional team matches, SFA opened the day with sixth-ranked McKendree, drawing one of the hottest teams in the nation. But the Ladyjacks were able to cool off the Bearcats with a 1,007-948 victory, paced by a 236 from Schwartz to start the day. Sophomore Kelsi Anderson added a 205 for the Ladyjacks with Kraushaar’s 192 and Beeney’s 191 helping to push SFA to the victory.
Round two saw a familiar face as SFA and Nebraska renewed their budding rivalry. The Ladyjacks had some strong performances, but the Cornhuskers were able to edge out the 1,099 – 1,031 victory, despite a 257 from Schwartz. Lynn (217) and Beeney (213) both registered 200-pin games but it wasn’t enough to propel the Ladyjacks to the win.
SFA would respond in match three, edging out St. Francis (Pa.) 990-972 in one of the tightest matches of the day. Beeney was the top Ladyjack performer against the Red Flash, bowling a 234, with Lynn adding a 211. Schwartz’s 195 and Kraushaar’s 190 proved to be enough to give the Ladyjacks the pins it needed to secure the victory.
The Ladyjacks then built on that momentum, racing past Tulane 1,026 – 871 as Schwartz continued her solid play, bowling a 258 against the Green Wave. Beeney added a 206 with Kraushaar’s 197 helping pace the Ladyjacks to the victory.
After opening the day with a win against McKendree, the Ladyjacks bookended their day with a similar result, defeating the Bearcats 1,076-1,020. Lynn couldn’t miss, bowling a career-best 279, which is tied for the second-best round ever in program history, to lead SFA against McKendree. Kraushaar posted a 209 with Schwartz adding a 205, helping the Ladyjacks post a 4-1 record on the day.
Sitting at 6-4 through the first two rounds, SFA has put itself into the championship bracket for Sunday’s best-of-seven baker bracket play as the number three seed. The Ladyjacks draw McKendree for a third time in the opening match of the day, needing three victories to register the third tournament title in program history.
