NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Stephen F. Austin took on Incarnate Word on Sunday afternoon and emerged with another win this weekend. SFA improves to 11-4-0 overall and 8-2-0 in conference. The two goals of the game were by senior Brooke Dunnigan and sophomore Breanna Moore. After four years of being an anchor on the SFA back line, Dunnigan found her first career goal off a free kick in the 17th minute. Moore tacked on goal number five for her season, giving her the third most goals on the team. The Ladyjack offensive attack would be spread out as five different Ladyjacks would take two shots each, and five others would have one shot on the afternoon.
Incarnate Word started the play action with a shot in the 3rd minute, forcing senior goalkeeper Lillie Ehlert to make an early save. SFA would then try their luck off a corner kick, which turned into two shots by Dunnigan and senior Hailey Hunt but they would go high. Ten minutes later the Ladyjacks would receive a free kick about 30 feet out. Junior Hanna Barker smashed the kick into the crowd of players in the net. Dunnigan would come up with the header in the net to put SFA in the lead at the 16:54 minute mark. The Ladyjacks would go on taking three more shots over Incarnate Word’s two shots on the half.
After the break, the Cardinals would win two corner kicks in the first minute of play, but the SFA defense cleared the ball both times. The second corner was cleared by a perfectly timed punch from Ehlert. The ball would then remain around midfield until Moore would get her break away, dribble through a pair of defenders, and face the goalie one on one. She fired through the right side to bump the score 2-0. Freshman Brooke Shirley would have a pair of shots on goal in the 66th minute, but the Cardinals would block both attempts. Time would wind down into the 81st minute before SFA would get another good opportunity at goal. Redshirt sophomore Lauren Hall would get a great look at goal forcing the Cardinal’s goalie to make a diving save.
Stephen F. Austin would complete the afternoon outshooting Incarnate Word 15-8. Both team would take five corner kick opportunities, and Ehlert would have two saves to UIW’s three saves.
The Ladyjacks will be back on the home field next Friday, Oct. 28th. This game will be culmination of the regular season as the Ladyjacks face their conference rival Sam Houston.
