MANHATTAN, Kan. – A strong final round gave Stephen F. Austin something to build on as the Ladyjacks finished 11th at the 2015 Marilynn Smith Sunflower Invitational. SFA posted an 18-over 306 in round three, finishing the 54-hole event with a 90-over 954.
SFA was led by a strong performance from senior Sydney Reed who posted a career-best even-par 72 en route to a 14-over 230. After the opening round 77, the San Antonio native posted a 9-over 81 in round two before the even-par 72, finishing tied for 24th overall.
Reed finished 10 shots better than junior teammate Jessie White who carded a 24-over 240. White led SFA in round two with a 4-over 76 before shooting an 8-over 80 in round three. Juniors Ann Holcomb and Courtney Ford each recorded a 27-over 243, highlighted by a 4-over 76 by Ford over the final round, with Jamee Jorgensen rounding out the Ladyjack scorecard with a 42-over 258.
After halting play midway through round two, SFA and the rest of the field resumed play early this morning as the Ladyjacks posted a 38-over 326, struggling through the morning round as all but one golfer recorded a round in the 80s. SFA recovered nicely in round three, shaving 20 strokes off its round two total to card the 306, its lowest round of the season.
SFA finished 15 shots back of 10th-place Nebraska (75-over 939) and was 19 shots behind ninth-place Florida Gulf Coast (71-over 935), missing out on its first top-10 showing of the season and ending its streak of five-straight top-10 finishes. The Ladyjacks finished 81 strokes ahead of 12th-place Redlands C.C. (171-over 1,035).
SMU captured the tournament title, shooting a 9-over 873 and edging out DFW rival TCU (11-over 875) by two strokes to preserve the victory. Middle Tennessee (18-over 882) finished third with host Kansas State (26-over 890) and Southland Conference rival Central Arkansas (30-over 894) rounding out the top-five.
SFA will have some time off before returning to the links in just under three weeks as the Ladyjacks will next travel to Tulsa, Okla., for the 2015 Oral Roberts Shootout, being held September 28-29.
