NACOGDOCHES, Texas – A near program-record performance by senior middle blocker Jacque Allen was the primary driving force behind a 3-0 (25-9, 25-14, 25-17) Stephen F. Austin volleyball triumph over Prairie View A&M in Shelton Gym on Tuesday evening.
Taking part in her second-to-last regular season non-conference skirmish in an SFA uniform, the Mansfield, Texas, product hammered down a match-high 12 kills on just 14 swings. That translated to an eye-popping hitting percentage of .857 which now stands as the third-highest single-match figure in program history.
Allen’s powerful percentage helped buoy the Ladyjacks’ team attack figure to .388 by the end of the match and two other SFA players wrapped up the battle with a hitting percentage north of .400.
Sophomore outside hitter Haley Coleman registered the lone double-double of the match by way of an 11-kill, 13-dig outing. The Rockwall, Texas, native swung at a clip of .409 while junior Justice Walker put down 11 terminations and committed just two errors in 17 tries to finish with an attack percentage of .529.
“Our middles are extremely dynamic and they’re very capable players,” said 28th-year head coach Debbie Humphreys. “They have the ability to catch on fire at any time and Jacque was able to do that tonight.”
Thanks to the lopsided victory, SFA hiked its Shelton Gym winning streak to 16 matches and rolls into its first Southland Conference road swing of 2015 riding a four-match unbeaten stretch.
The Lady Panthers posed almost no threat to SFA for the entirety of the match. The Ladyjacks’ opening salvo consisted of a 10-2 run that featured Allen prominently. She struck for three kills and one of her two solo rejections during that span.
Finding holes in Prairie View A&M’s defense was not a difficult task to accomplish as SFA hit .536 in the first frame. With the match well in hand following another 10-2 scoring surge in the middle set, Humphreys called on the services of some of the younger members of her squad to finish things off.
Freshman McKenzie Brewer took over the set-up duties for SFA’s offense in the second and submitted a match-high 22 assists by the time her night came to a close. Fellow first-year player Makenzee Hanna chipped in four terminations and four block assists in two sets played.
Senior OJ Olson posted another strong defensive showing, netting a match-best 19 digs while Shannon Connell passed out 18 assists before giving way to Brewer.
San Antonio is the first destination SFA will head to when it returns to Southland Conference play later this week. The Ladyjacks’ first league road match of the season comes at Incarnate Word on Thursday night at 7 p.m.
