DENTON, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin women’s volleyball team struggled offensively on Wednesday night, falling to North Texas in straight sets (18-25, 16-25, 18-25) inside the NT Volleyball Center.
The Ladyjacks (6-6) were paced offensively by outside hitters Haley Coleman and Tori Bates, as each finished the match with eight kills. Justice Walker, Makenzee Hanna and Jacque Allen chipped in five kills apiece. SFA had a tough time breaking through the Mean Green defense as the team hit just .087 on the evening.
North Texas (6-6) found more rhythm in its attack, hitting .309 as a unit. Senior libero OJ Olson did her best to slow the Mean Green, leading SFA with 14 digs in three sets. Bates added seven digs of her own with Lexus Cain, Shannon Connell and Coleman contributing five each.
Freshman McKenzie Brewer led the Ladyjacks with 21 assists and Connell ended the night with 10 in two sets played.
SFA got off to a quick start in the match, jumping out 5-1 early and leading by as many as six at 12-6. At that stage, UNT went on a 10-1 run to take control at 16-13 and never looked back en route to a 25-18 victory.
The Ladyjacks also imposed themselves early in the second set, using three kills from Bates and three Mean Green attack errors to go up 6-2. Four quick points by the home team would tie the set up at 6-6 and SFA couldn’t reestablish the separation the rest of the set, falling 25-16.
SFA trailed the entire third set and hit a match-low .026 as a team while UNT posted a .297 attack percentage to win 25-18 and claim the sweep.
The Ladyjacks will next travel to Waco this weekend for the Baylor Tournament. SFA will play Baylor on Friday night at 7:00 p.m. and then take on Rice and UNC Greensboro on Saturday afternoon. Fans can listen live to every match at SFAVolleyBlog.net.
