NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin women’s soccer team saw it’s nine-game home winning streak come to an end on Sunday afternoon with Texas State handing the Ladyjacks a 4-0 loss at SFA Soccer Field. SFA concludes the non-conference portion of its schedule with a 1-6-0 record.
“First of all, you have to credit Texas State,” said head coach Wally Crittenden. “They came in with a good game plan, they were motivated and they brought good energy. Texas State did what they wanted to do when they wanted to do it. From our standpoint, it starts with me, then our coaching staff, and goes all the way down to our players. It was unacceptable effort. This is not the standard of competitive mentality that we want to set for our program.
“As we head into our first conference game on Friday, it’s important that our coaches, players and everyone involved with the program take a step back and reflect on what we could have done better today. Ultimately, I feel that this is not an effort that will be replicated.”
The Ladyjacks outshot the Bobcats 14-10 and held a 5-3 edge in corner kicks on Sunday. The run of play didn’t favor one team over another for most of the afternoon but Texas State proved to be the more opportunistic side, holding an 8-5 advantage in shots on goal and getting four goals to show for it.
SFA created several good scoring chances going through sophomore Hanna Barker down the left flank. Barker gave Texas State’s back line trouble all day with dangerous crosses and also had two good looking shots in the second half. The forward fed a ball to senior Rachel Owens on a corner kick in the 74th minute and Owens nearly had her second goal of the weekend after putting a header on frame. Owens led SFA in shots (3) and shots on goal (2) for the second straight game.
Sophomore forward Michaela Mencacci fired a shot on goal that required a difficult save in the closing minutes after receiving a corner kick from Brooke Dunnigan. Senior forward Ashton Norman and junior midfielder Amanda Doyle also tested the Texas State keeper with shots on goal during the match.
The Bobcats (4-2-0) scored two goals in each half on Sunday, getting the first in the 12th minute. Taylor Allen found Kira Zapalac at the top of the 18, where she buried a ball into the right side netting. Texas State went up 2-0 in the 37th minute on an own goal off an Alyssa Phelan corner kick. A loose ball inside the six-yard box was deflected off a Ladyjack defender and trickled in.
Lauren Prater made it 3-0 in favor of the Bobcats 15 minutes into the second half. She collected a through ball down the center of the field from Rachel Grout and capitalized on the one-on-one situation. Texas State capped the scoring in the 77th minute when Kassi Hormuth finished a cross from the left sideline at the far post.
The Ladyjacks will begin their quest for a fifth consecutive Southland Conference regular season title when league play begins next Friday. SFA will host Northwestern State at 7:00 p.m. at SFA Soccer Field.
