2015 Preseason All-SLC Teams
FRISCO, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin women’s soccer team was well represented with the release of the 2015 Preseason All-Southland Conference teams on Tuesday afternoon, earning five selections between the first and second squads. The Ladyjacks claimed the second-most picks in the league.
Junior defender Brooke Dunnigan and senior defender Chantal Curry were each named to the first team with sophomore forward Hanna Barker, senior midfielder Rachel Owens and junior midfielder Amanda Doyle representing SFA on the second team.
Dunnigan and Curry will anchor an SFA defense that helped the Ladyjacks post an unblemished 11-0 mark in conference action last season en route to a fourth consecutive Southland Conference title. The duo helped SFA limit SLC opponents to just three goals in 11 games in 2014 – the fewest in the league. At the same time, both players turned the SFA back line into one of the best in the nation as the Ladyjacks ranked sixth in the country in shutout percentage (.650) and 11th in goals against average (.588).
Barker enters her sophomore campaign as SFA’s top returning goal scorer after tallying 18 points (7 goals, 4 assists) in 2014. The reigning SLC Freshman of the Year is expected to be one of the most dangerous attacking players in the league again this season.
Fellow preseason second teamers Doyle and Owens will be asked to dictate the tempo for the Ladyjacks in the midfield. The two veterans, who were named team captains along with Curry prior to the season, combined for five goals and four assists one year ago.
Dunnigan and Doyle were two of 11 automatic selections to the 2015 preseason all-conference soccer teams after being named to the 2014 All-Southland Conference teams last November. The remaining positions were nominated and voted on by league head coaches. Barker, Curry and Owens each received the most votes at their respective positions in this year’s selection process.
The 2015 preseason team polls, as voted on by SLC coaches and sports information directors, will be announced by the league office on Wednesday afternoon.
