FRISCO, Texas – Four Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks have been named preseason All-Southland Conference, announced today by the league office. Senior offensive lineman Byron Williams has been tabbed a first team selection with junior quarterback Zach Conque, junior offensive lineman Anthony Pullins and senior defensive tackle Lance Skyler all earning second team nods.
Williams adds to his preseason résumé, being named a STATS FCS third team preseason All-American earlier this month. A first team All-SLC selection in 2014, Williams has been a key figure on the Lumberjacks’ offensive line for the past three season, appearing in 36 games with 33 starts at left guard. He has been a major factor for a number of impressive performances, including Gus Johnson’s program-best 3,907 career rushing yards with 52 touchdowns.
Conque, the reigning SLC Newcomer of the Year, returns to anchor the Lumberjack offense after accounting for over 3,300 yards and 29 touchdowns in 2014. Conque threw for 2,733 yards and 15 touchdowns last season, completing 64.7 percent of his passes, while also rushing for 626 yards and 13 touchdowns, the best single-season rushing performance by a Lumberjack quarterback in program history.
Pullins joins Williams on the experienced offensive line as all five starters from 2014 return to anchor the trenches for the Lumberjacks. An honorable mention All-SLC selection last season, Pullins has played in 21 games with 17 starts for SFA, starting all 13 games at center in 2014.
Skyler looks to spearhead an experienced defensive line for the Lumberjacks in 2015 as the senior looks to build on his impressive résumé. An honorable mention All-SLC selection in 2014, Skyler has posted 15 tackles for loss, seven sacks and 103 total tackles for his career, including a team-best six sacks last season.
Returning student-athletes who earned all-conference honors at the conclusion of the 2014 season were automatically named to the preseason teams. Head coaches from the 11 schools that play football in the Southland Conference voted for the remaining 24 positions, which included two on the first-team offense, 12 positions on the second-team offense and 11 on the second-team defense. Coaches could not vote for their own players.
The preseason All-SLC teams have been announced leading up to the 2015 SLC Football Media Day next Wednesday, July 29, in Lake Charles, Louisiana. The conference’s two preseason polls – coaches and sports information directors – will be announced July 29 at media day.
