NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Stephen F. Austin head men’s basketball coach Brad Underwood has been named the 2015 Tim Hayward Volunteer of the Year, announced Tuesday by the United Way of Nacogdoches.
Underwood’s efforts during the ESPN/Infiniti Coaches’ Charity Challenge earned the Nacogdoches Area United Way a $10,000 donation. He advanced through two phases of balloting to the third round, and was backed by strong voting support from the community to end in seventh place overall.
“Susan and I were extremely excited to choose the United Way of Nacogdoches as our charity in the ESPN/Infiniti Challenge,” said Underwood. “Gary Lee Ashcraft and all of his people with the United Way proved to be superb partners for the Challenge. Helping the community of Nacogdoches where our great university is located was very important to Susan and I, and we wanted to win it and keep the money right here in our community.”
In total, 48 prominent college basketball coaches participated in the ESPN/Infiniti Coaches’ Charity Challenge and raised $349,000 for various charities around the country. The National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) and the NCAA co-sponsored the competition.
“A big thank you goes out for all of the wonderful support we received from the community and our unbelievable administration at SFA,” Underwood said, “They jumped in with both feet and helped lead us to a Sweet 16 performance and a prize of $10,000.”
Underwood will be honored with the award at the Nacogdoches Area United Way’s annual kick off banquet on August 11 at Banita Creek Hall.
The Nacogdoches Area United Way raises funds through work place campaigns for allocation to agencies that serve the needs of people in the areas of health, education, income, and crisis.
