NACOGDOCHES, Texas -- Stephen F. Austin head football coach Clint Conque today announced the addition of linebacker George Stone III to the Lumberjack roster. Stone comes to SFA with two years of collegiate eligibility remaining.
"We're very excited to have a player of George's caliber joining our program," Conque said. "He is a very mature player, having played at a high level junior college as well as a well-respected program like Indiana State. He has good size and brings tremendous physicality and will make an immediate impact at the inside linebacker position."
Stone joins the Lumberjacks after spending his sophomore season at Sacramento City College where he led the Panthers with 84 tackles in 2014, including 65 solo stops, 16 tackles for loss and eight sacks. Stone helped guide Sac City to a 7-4 overall record, including a 3-2 mark in Nor-Cal League play, capping the season with a 41-35 win over Diablo Valley College in the East Bay Bowl.
Previously, Stone spent two seasons at Indiana State where he played in six games for the Sycamores with a pair of starts in 2013. He tallied 27 total tackles on the season, including 11 solo tackles and a tackle for loss after utilizing his redshirt season in 2012.
A native of Louisville, Kentucky, Stone was a four year letterwinner at St. Xavier High School. A first team all-district and all-state selection, Stone tallied 98 solo tackles, eight sacks and five forced fumbles in his senior season and was rated as the top linebacker in the state of Kentucky by Scout.com. He also earned national acclaim, ranked among the top 150 linebackers in the country for the class of 2011.
Stone becomes the seventh defensive transfer to join the Lumberjacks this offseason and the second linebacker to join the ranks, pairing up with junior Price Miller who also played in the CCCAA last season with Golden West College. The duo will add veteran depth to a talented linebacking corps headlined by senior Justin Owens and sophomore Chance Barney.
SFA is entering its summer workout schedule, gearing up to the start of fall camp in August. The Lumberjacks, ranked 17th in the preseason Sporting News FCS poll, open up the 2015 season in 100 days, hosting 22nd-ranked Northern Arizona on Saturday, September 5th in a battle of Lumberjacks at Homer Bryce Stadium.
Season tickets for the 2015 SFA football season are now on sale by contacting the SFA Ticket Office at (936) 468-JACK (5225).
