NACOGDOCHES, Texas -- Stephen F. Austin head basketball coach Brad Underwood is remaining busy during the offseason, and not just when it comes to recruiting and player development.
Underwood, an active supporter of the "Coaches vs. Cancer" organization, will be taking part in a pair of major events, helping to raise funds and increase cancer awareness. The organization had teamed up with the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC), becoming a driving force in the fight against cancer and raising over $87 million to date.
The Lumberjacks' head coach is in Columbia, South Carolina for the third annual "B-Ball of the South," being hosted by South Carolina head coach Frank Martin. Being held at South Carolina's Colonial Life Arena, Underwood will participate in the event his evening as the previous two events have raised nearly $270,000 for the "Coaches vs. Cancer" initiative. He is one of a number of coaches to participate in the event, including Martin, his former mentor, Saint Joseph's head coach Phil Martelli and a number of ESPN college basketball personalities.
Underwood then heads to Las Vegas, Nevada, for the 2015 Coaches vs. Cancer Las Vegas Golf Classic, being held May 17-19. Founded by Oklahoma head coach Lon Kruger in 2007, this year's event will be the ninth installment as some of the top basketball coaches from around the nation has made this one of the top Coaches vs. Cancer events in the country, raising over $427,000 in 2014 alone.
The Coaches vs. Cancer program is a nationwide collaboration between the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) that empowers basketball coaches, their teams, and local communities to make a difference in the fight against cancer. The program leverages the personal experiences, community leadership, and professional excellence of basketball coaches nationwide to increase cancer awareness and promote healthy living through year-round awareness efforts, fundraising activities, and advocacy programs.
