HOUSTON, Texas -- The Stephen F. Austin track and field teams came away from the J. Fred Duckett Twilight with three individual titles, a school record and several more top five finishes on Saturday at Rice University.
Jessica Spelling had a big meet for the Ladyjacks, taking first in the women's discus with a personal best throw of 152 feet (46.33m). She also posted a second place throw of 46-1.25 (14.05m) in the shot put and got sixth in the hammer after a top toss of 152-5 (46.46m) to cap a busy but very successful meet.
Trevon Caudle and Chasity Clark led SFA on the track with top performances in the sprints. Caudle took first place in a crowded 43-man field in the 100-meter dash, using a time of 10.70 seconds to do so. In the 200m, Caudle came in third out of 35 competitors with a time of 21.63 seconds.
On the women's side in the 200m, Clark paced a 33-woman field with a time of 24.01 seconds. One week after taking fourth at Baylor, Clark improved her time by nine hundredths of a second to earn first place honors. SFA's Aliyah Davis took fourth in the event after coming in just behind Clark in 24.48 seconds.
Stephanie White and Bria McIver each performed well in their hurdles events. White, a school record holder in the 100mH, used a personal best mark of 59.59 seconds to finish second among 23 in the 400-meter hurdles. Her time puts her in the mix of the nation's elite this season and gives her a new school record. McIver got third of 29 at the 100-meter range (14.22 seconds).
Staying on the track, DeJernel Jordan continued to run well at the 800-meter distance. She recorded a PR on Saturday night and snuck into second place out of 25 in the field. Her time of 2:09.71 was second only to UTSA's Stephanie Wangui.
School record holder Rana Ryan and Macy Davis led the Ladyjacks in the distance races, each coming in fourth at their respective events. Ryan was just off her own school record pace in the women's 1,500m (4:31.02) and Davis' time of 18:13.17 in the 5,000m was fourth-best of 29 women.
Also among the best showings for the Ladyjacks on the day were the efforts of the four student-athletes in the women's 4x400 meter relay. The squad took second of 14 using a time of 3:42.04.
Trey Darty found success in his jump events, going fourth/fifth respectively in the long jump and triple jump. Out of 27 men, Darty's jump of 23-8 (7.21m) warranted fourth place while he also leaped 45.4.5 (13.83m) in the triple jump.
Rounding out the top five individual performances for the Lumberjacks on Saturday was Lucas Akins in the discus (fourth of 53 -- 50.39m) and Daven Murphree in the men's pole vault (third of 22 -- 4.92m).
As a team, SFA will now start preparing for the 2015 Southland Conference Outdoor Championships held May 8-10 in Hammond, Louisiana.
