NACOGDOCHES, Texas -- The Stephen F. Austin softball team lost a heartbreaker on Sunday afternoon at SFA Softball Field, dropping a 2-1 decision to first place Northwestern State. The Lady Demons close out the three-game sweep of the Ladyjacks with the win on SFA's Senior Day.
The Ladyjacks move to 10-13 in Southland Conference play after the weekend, falling to the eighth position in the league standings. SFA will need three wins next weekend against Sam Houston State and help from Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Nicholls to squeeze their way into the sixth and final spot for the SLC Tournament.
Freshman Callee Guffey was lights out for SFA in the circle on Sunday, tossing a complete 7.0 innings, allowing just two runs on five hits and one walk. She induced 20 fly ball outs out of the 21 outs she recorded on the afternoon. Despite the solid performance, Guffey (10-13) was charged with the loss.
Northwestern State (31-15, 20-2 SLC) jumped out to 2-0 lead with solo home runs from Natalie Landry and Kellye Kincannon in the second and sixth innings. The two long balls pushed the Lady Demon homer total to nine during the three-game series.
The Ladyjacks were able to answer back with a run in the bottom of the sixth inning with the help of Lindsay Campbell's bat. Brittany Lewis drew a two-out walk before Campbell hit a rocket to the left field fence for an RBI triple. The timely hit by the centerfielder was the only run scoring opportunity that the Ladyjacks could convert during the game.
SFA got something cooking in the bottom of the fifth inning, loading the bases with just one out. Taylor LeFlore reached on an infield single, Taylor Vick got aboard on an error and Heather Hollingsworth lined one into left to create the traffic jam. Alisa Hamilton stepped to the plate with three ducks on the pond, but in a bit of bad luck, lined a hot shot straight at the Lady Demon third baseman. Northwestern State was able to rob Hamilton of extra bases and get the inning-ending double play to suppress the threat.
SFA will next be in action on Tuesday evening on the road against Louisiana Tech. First pitch in Ruston, Louisiana is set for 6:00 p.m.
