RUSTON, La. -- Despite holding two separate leads over the course of the game, one as late as the fifth inning, the Stephen F. Austin softball team couldn't close out the win, falling to Louisiana Tech 8-4 at LA Tech Softball Complex on Tuesday evening. The loss drops the Ladyjacks to 18-30 on the year.
SFA led 4-2 in the fifth inning, but LA Tech (30-15) scored six runs over the final two frames to rally for the 8-4 victory.
Senior Shalie Day led the Ladyjacks offensively, going 2-for-4 with a run and two RBI in the contest. Taylor LeFlore also notched two hits, finishing a perfect 2-for-2 with a walk.
Day got things going early, helping SFA score two runs in the first inning. Brittany Lewis walked to lead off the game, stole second and was standing on third after Alisa Hamilton reached on a throwing error. Hamilton also swiped second to put two runners in scoring position with nobody out for Day. Day followed with a two-run single up the middle, giving the Ladyjacks an early 2-0 cushion.
SFA held the 2-0 advantage until LA Tech got on the board with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game 2-2.
In the fifth inning, the Ladyjacks capitalized on two Lady Techster errors to regain control 4-2. Day and Taylor Fraccastoro hit back-to-back singles to put runners on the corners with one out. With Lindsay Campbell at the plate, Fraccastoro stole second and a subsequent throwing error by the LA Tech catcher enabled Day to come home for the first run of the inning.
Campbell then singled and Fraccastoro took home after an error by the LA Tech first baseman, making it 4-2.
From there it was all Lady Techsters as the home team scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth and four more in the sixth to go up 8-4.
Lewis (2-3) pitched a complete game for SFA, allowing eight runs -- seven earned -- on 10 hits and four walks. She was charged with the loss.
The Ladyjacks will close out the regular season when they return to Southland Conference play this weekend at Sam Houston State. The two rivals will begin the three-game series with a Friday doubleheader starting at 3:00 p.m.
