BEAUMONT, Texas -- Stephen F. Austin started out in its usual style, taking the first two doubles sets to claim the early lead on New Orleans in the 2015 SLC tournament quarterfinals. But the second-seeded Ladyjacks struggled in singles, taking just two of the six matches as the seventh-seeded Privateers rallied for the 4-3 upset.
The loss ends SFA's memorable 2015 season as the Ladyjacks close out the year with an overall mark of 16-7.
It was business as usual for SFA early on, beginning with an 8-5 win by Malena Gordo and Dhanielly Quevedo in the No. 1 doubles position. Vivienne Kulicke and Valeria Terentyeva then clinched the early point for the Ladyjacks with the 8-6 decision, continuing their dominance from the No. 3 position.
Moving to singles play, SFA took the 2-0 lead as Kulicke won a convincing 6-0, 6-1 decision at the No. 2 spot. Victories by UNO at the No. 3 and No. 6 positions tied the match at 2-2, but a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 win by No. 1 Gordo gave SFA the 3-2 lead, needing just one victory out of the final two singles matches.
However that victory never came as Terentyeva won the opener 6-4 but didn't manage a point the rest of the way, falling 0-6, 0-6 at the No. 5 spot as the Privateers evened the score at 3-3. With the fate of the match hinging on the No. 4 court, Quevedo rallied from a 3-6 loss in game one to win the second 7-5. But it was the Privateers that made the key shots when it counted, winning the third 6-4 to complete the comeback and eliminate the Ladyjacks.
It brings to a close one of the most memorable seasons in SFA history as the Ladyjacks went 10-1 in SLC play, earning a share of the conference title for the first time since 2012 and just the second time in program history. Four Ladyjacks earned All-SLC honors, led by Kulicke being named the Freshman of the Year, a first team singles honoree and a second team doubles selection.
