DALLAS, Texas -- The Stephen F. Austin women's soccer team continued to take steps forward during its competitive spring season, using a goal by Jasmine White to defeat SMU 1-0 at Westcott Field on a beautiful Saturday afternoon.
The Ladyjacks improve to 2-1 this spring with the win, but more importantly, have started to establish their new identity for the fall season where they will seek a fifth consecutive Southland Conference championship.
White broke a 0-0 tie in the 54th minute of play, running onto a long ball served by Brooke Dunnigan over the top of the Mustang backline. After getting past the last line of defenders, White slotted the ball home with a crisp finish at the net.
The Ladyjack defense did the rest, recording its first clean sheet of the spring. Goalkeepers Lillie Ehlert and Allyson Smith split time between the posts to anchor SFA's defensive efforts.
"Today was a great test for us," said head coach Wally Crittenden. "SMU had a great game plan to match up and really challenged our schemes and possession. The determination and competitive character we displayed was very good throughout the game. We had a fantastic run-of-play goal delivered by Brooke Dunnigan and a really sharp finish by Jasmine White.
"These are the games -- on the road against good teams -- that we have to experience to be where we want to be come the fall. A special thank you to all of the SFA fans and future Ladyjacks who came out to support the team today. It was awesome seeing all of that purple in the stands."
The Ladyjacks will play two more road games next weekend before returning home for the annual Alumni Game at SFA Soccer Field on Saturday, April 25 at 11:00 a.m. to wrap up the competitive spring season.
"We will build off today's success and continue to fine tune and prepare for another great test on Friday night versus the Houston Aces professional team down in Conroe," said Crittenden.
Friday night's game will start at 7:00 p.m. at Dutch Lions Facility.
