LAS CRUCES, N.M. - Stephen F. Austin came up one match short against New Mexico State, dropping a 4-3 decision to the Aggies in Las Cruces, N.M. The loss drops the Ladyjacks to 5-4 on the season heading into Southland Conference play.
In the doubles competiton, SFA's No. 1 team of Malena Gordo and Dhanielly Quevedo cruised past Susan Alcaraz and Erika Castillo Lopez 6-1. But the Ladyjacks suffered a pair of hard fought losses in the other two matches as Valeria Terentyeva and Vivienne Kulicke fell 6-4 while Julia Lorca and Macarena Sedano Acosta dropped a 7-5 decision to give the Aggies the doubles point.
That point would prove costly as SFA split the six single matches against New Mexico State, highlighted by a 6-7, 6-4, 10-8 victory by No. 1 Malena Gordo over Ashvarya Shrivistava. No. 3 Dhanielly Quevedo defeated Denise Van Der Ben 2-6, 6-4-6-3 while No. 4 Valeria Terentyeva earned a 6-4, 0-6, 6-3 win over Erika Castillo Lopez.
No. 2 Vivienne Kulicke took the opening set 6-1, but fell in the final two 4-6, 3-6 to Susana Alcarez. No. 5 Macarena Sedano Acosta dropped a hard-fought 6-7, 4-6 match to Mia Brandt with No. 6 Julia Lorca losing 1-6, 4-6 to Marie-Pier Thiffault.
Stephen F. Austin was scheduled to return to the Schlief Tennis Complex this Sunday, March 8, for its Southland Conference opener against Central Arkansas at 11 a.m. However, due to the impending inclement weather, that match has been postponed to a future date that will be named later.
SFA next returns to the courts on Saturday, March 14, traveling to A&M-Corpus Christi for an 11 a.m. match. The match against the Islanders begins a four-match road swing, including matchups with Incarnate Word, UT-San Antonio and Cincinnati.
